Wouldn't it be great to understand exactly how Google decides to rank websites? And wouldn't it be even better if the information on Google search rankings came from a true ''insider'' at Google? Well if the Google blog is to be believed, the company has begun an effort to do just that. Udi Manber, a Vice President of Engineering at Google is part of the team called 'Search Quality'. Search Quality is the name of the team responsible for the ranking of Google search results. That is, when you type a search query into the search box at Google and hit enter, the Search Quality team is responsible to decide within a fraction of a second which among the billions of pages on the web to display, and in what order.

Google researchers are claiming that a newly developed approach to visual search may do for image searching what PageRank did for text search. "The research paper, 'PageRank for Product Image Search,' is focused on a subset of the images that the giant search engine has cataloged because of the tremendous computing costs required to analyze and compare digital images. To do this for all of the images indexed by the search engine would be impractical, the researchers said. Google does not disclose how many images it has cataloged, but it asserts that its Google Image Search is the 'most comprehensive image search on the Web.'"

Google has a pretty reliable algorithm for determining page rank on text searches. All sorts of attempts are made to game the system, by both legitimate and unscrupulous Search Engine Optimization schemes alike, but those strategies always seem to fail in the long run. But put a search query into Google Images, especially with safe-search turned off, and you'll get a bizarre assortment of pictures to look at. That's because image searches generally just comb through the associated text appended to images. It's the reason why if you're an ornithologist looking for pictures of birds with bright blue feet, you might see a different sort of boobies if you search for them. Now Google says it's got a software solution to more closely align Image Search Page Rank with reality.

In a major step forward in search technology, Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) is working with Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) to make Flash files searchable in online search. The project will enable searches on Flash content to return text and links, which can then be indexed, and hence available in search results for the users. Content from a Flash application or even a game or advertisement will be available to search engines, reports InfoWorld. Pages containing a Flash .SWF file will be returned in a search. Google has already implemented this, while Yahoo, ever the laggard, will enable Flash search in a future version, whenever that comes out.

On Bloomberg Radio this week, Google Search exec Marissa Mayer was asked how Google justifies blowing off the $200 million per year the company claims it could make from text ads on its image search results. Her response, "Ads should match the results." She said if Google were to run ads in Image Search, they would likely be image ads. She also said attention would be paid to the relevance, user experience, and types of interaction with image search.

Microsoft lost Internet search users in the United States to Google and former takeover target Yahoo last month, research firm ComScore said. Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, handled 8.5 percent of queries in May, down from 9.1 percent the month before, Reston, Va.-based ComScore said Thursday in a statement. Google extended its lead to 61.8 percent, and Yahoo grew to 20.6 percent, ComScore said. The companies are vying for a bigger piece of the $41 billion online advertising market. Microsoft's talks to buy Yahoo's search business for $1 billion ended last week, around the time Yahoo struck a deal to show some Google ads on its search pages. Microsoft's proposal would have included an $8 billion investment in Yahoo. Google handled 61.

Google today sped ahead in the web search domain once again with the release of the Google Earth API. Yes, the recent improvements to Live Maps were impressive, but today the search giant has put Google Earth into the browser. Microsoft made this move first, completely disregarding Google's client release of Google Earth, with its Virtual Earth API and browser plug-in. Google's Windows-only release today seems to focus on 3D, and speed. The performance is noticeably superior to Microsoft's, but there are still obvious kinks that need to be worked out.
