Google added YouTube to the list of services for which it provides free analytics. YouTube Insight is designed to give content creators, content partners and advertisers more information on the performance of their videos, beyond how many views it gets, comments, favorites, and other basic data currently displayed, according to Tracy Chan, a YouTube product manager. Google already offers analytics for ads, Google Reader, and other services.

Ars Technica brings word that Google Sky, formerly only available as an extension of the Google Earth software, is now accessible through your web browser. The interface of Google Sky is quite similar to that of Google Maps, complete with search and alternate views by spectrum. The story also mentions (and more importantly, links) ten of the more interesting sights. We discussed Google Sky's initial release last year. Quoting: "Visible light only shows us a small picture of the entire universe; non-visible spectra such as ultraviolet (UV), infrared and X-ray hold a whole other world of information. Here is where Google Sky becomes very cool. There are three more sections that highlight fantastic images from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the GALEX Evolution Explorer (UV), and the Spitzer Space Telescope (IR).

A web seminar Google held yesterday at KMWorld Magazine offered a great deal of insight into how Google manages projects and communication internally. The presentation by Google followed an employee through his first few weeks at the company, explaining the many tools he’s using: from the Google intranet MOMA, the Google Ideas site and Google Caribou Alpha, to Google Experts Search, “Googler Search,” and Google Apps. Following is a smaller excerpt of the large-size screenshots & info Google was showing in the 59-page presentation, with thanks to Brian – who has a wrap-up of the presentation as well as the full slides at his blog – for sending this in. KMWorld says the presentation will be archived at their site eventually, so perhaps if you register with them you might still be able to see the event.

Under 18? No Google for you. In what has to be one of the weirdest news items I've read recently, Google's Terms of Service prohibit any person under the age of 18 from utilizing any Google Web properties. So that means no searching, no YouTube, no Gmail. At issue here is Google's stance that a person under 18 is not capable of signing a binding contract - and that apparently you need a contract to search the Internet. Logically, if you have to be 18 to use Google's properties, you'd have to be 18 to have a Myspace page, right? Nope - Myspace only requires users to be 16 to publicly post their "preferences", religion, and those awesome pictures of that party at that kid's house when his parents were out of town. Facebook? 13. What makes this even more odd is that Google is sponsoring an art contest - Doodle 4 Google - for students K-12, w

Microsoft has weighed in on this evening’s announcement, claiming that the agreement gives Google (NSDQ: GOOG) 90 percent of the online ad market, and thus makes the market “far less competitive.” So far, it doesn’t have an official strategic response, other than that it’s weighing its options. But it does deliver a key message to Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) shareholders: “Our proposal remains the only alternative put forward that offers Yahoo! shareholders full and fair value for their shares, gives every shareholder a vote on the future of the company, and enhances choice for content creators, advertisers, and consumers.” Basically, if you want to get paid for your shares, you’ll go with Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT). If you want to see the value of your holdings collapse, then sign an ad deal with Google and good luck going it alone.

Things were ticking along nicely in the search world with not so much as a speed bump to be seen (set aside the market panic about Google’s (GOOG) paid click decline). Then along came March. Overall volume of search in March exploded, with total queries increasing over 6% and surpassing the 9 billion mark. That’s the biggest month-over-month increase in total search volume since July of last year. Interestingly enough, this growth was not driven by our perennial search leader Google. In fact, Google actually underperformed the market for the first time in 9 months and saw market share decline more than ½ a point. So where were the big gains?

Google, seeking to diversify beyond four-line text advertisements, is matching clients' promotions with the most popular video clips on YouTube. The buzz-targeting program flags clips based on the number of viewers, users' ratings and how many people tag them as a favorite, Google said Tuesday in a statement. Google is betting on video ads to curb its reliance on the text links that provide the bulk of its $16.6 billion in annual sales. Almost 85 million people in the United States watched a total of 4.3 billion videos on YouTube in March, market researcher ComScore said yesterday. Lions Gate Entertainment was the first client to use buzz targeting to promote the movie "The Forbidden Kingdom," which was released last month.

If you are the director of Social Media at Google (GOOG), wouldn’t you rather be working at Facebook? That is what Ethan Beard decided to do. Both at the top ranks and at the bottom, Facebook is finding that the best place to recruit is Google. (It is doing to Google what Google once did to Microsoft).

Google has taken a dig at Apple's iPhone, saying the device has a much smaller market than phones which run Android, the mobile phone operating system Google helped develop. The search giant said that despite selling 4 million units within the first 7 months of its release, the iPhone was ultimately a more limited device than phones which ran on the Google-backed platform, because the potential for developers to build new applications using Android was greater.Rich Miner, group manager for mobile platforms at Google, was quoted by IT Week as saying: "Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone."Mr Miner told a conference in Silicon Valley that whereas the iPhone had "a single manufacturer" and was "targeted at a particular demographic", develo

CAMPBELL, CA, Mar 27 (MARKET WIRE) -- A new report from market analyst firm Infonetics Research shows that the amount of money Internet content providers (ICPs) like Google, YouTube, and MySpace spent on optical network hardware worldwide hit $204 million in 2007, and is expected to increase steadily over the next 5 years. The report, Optical Network Hardware by Vertical Market, says 86% of the 2007 $13.9 billion optical hardware market comes from service providers, with the bulk comingfrom incumbent telcos and mobile operators, of course, but with increasing amounts coming from competitive telcos, cable operators (particularly MSOs in North America), and ICPs. The remaining 14% of the global market comes from non service providers, with the majority of that share coming from the top 4 verticals: government, finance, utilities, and educat

Google loses marginal global market share With all the noise around Microsoft and Yahoo, one could think it would all be green acres for Google who stood to gain market share if either company slipped up. And yet, according to a recent report Google has become less popular for search, losing a marginal 1/3 of a percent around the globe. And while 0.3% may not seem like a terrible lot considering that Yahoo's global participation dropped and Microsoft's stayed the same, someone else has picked up the slack, but we don't know who yet.
