Anyone hoping that Google Apps can rival Microsoft’s products in the enterprise marketplace will have pause for thought after reading the astonishing testimony of development manager Sergey Solyanik, who has just gone Back to Microsoft after a stint working at Google. His blog post starts out innocuously enough with a list of good things at Google that Microsoft ought to emulate as an employer. But when it comes to “So why did I leave?” Solyanik rips into Google’s working practices, in particular criticizing the effects of its business model, which emphasizes free software at the expense of utility.

Philipp Lenssen writes "Google announced their very own browser project called Google Chrome — an announcement in the form of a comic book drawn by Scott McCloud, no less. Google says Google Chrome will be open source, include a new JavaScript virtual machine, include the Google Gears add-on by default, and put the tabs above the address bar (not below), among other things. I've also uploaded Google's comic book with all the details (details given from Google's perspective, anyway... let's see how this holds up). While Google provided the URL www.google.com/chrome there's nothing up there yet."

Are you kidding me? Google getting rid of Google Page Creator, this must be a joke. No, it's for real. Google says they're going to be transitioning all Google Page Creator websites into their new Google Sites. Excuse me, but Google Sites doesn't come close to being as good as Google Page Creator. Why in the world would Google choose to keep the lesser of the two?

Google buys a lot of software companies -- YouTube, Blogger, Picasa, GrandCentral, Keyhole (Google Earth), Writely (Google Docs), JotSpot (Google Sites), Dodgeball etc -- but there's a tendency for them to stagnate. Nik Cubrilovic at TechCrunch IT reckons this is because of Google's proprietary software stack. In Why Google Slows Down Acquired Companies, he says:

Lawrence Person writes "Mac Daily News was one of many Apple-followers to note that Apple Inc.'s market capitalization exceeded Google today. That means that the combined value of all Apple's outstanding shares of stock exceeded the combined value of all Google's outstanding shares of stock. Apple's stock is worth $157 billion and change vs. Google's $156 billion. Other companies Apple has surpassed in market cap include Cisco, HP, and Intel. Apple's Mac OS X and the open source Linux operating systems continue to erode the install base of Microsoft's proprietary platform. According to statistics made available by Net Applications, Windows accounted for a market share of no less than 93.06% back in August 2007. One year later, and all the available versions of Windows own just 90.66% of the operating system market – a consistent drop, which places Microsoft dangerously close to the 90% milestone. In fact, by the end of 2008, the Redmond company could see Windows' share of the OS market depreciate under 90%, if the current trends continue.

Google announced the launch of a free music-search service in China via its search engine, the Wall Street Journal reported. The service allows users to download licensed music files without charge and will be supported by advertising revenue split between Google, music companies and Chinese music website Top100.cn. Google did not specify which music labels have signed on. Internet users outside of China will not have access to the service. The move could help Google gain on Chinese rival search firm Baidu.com, which as of the second quarter held a 64.6% share in China's online search market compared to Google's 26.1%, according to data from technology consultancy Analysys International. A lawsuit was recently filed against Baidu for facilitating the download of unlicensed music via its search engine.

mytrip points out news that Google's index of unique URLs has reached a milestone: one trillion. Google's blog provides some more information, noting, "The first Google index in 1998 already had 26 million pages, and by 2000 the Google index reached the one billion mark. Over the last eight years, we've seen a lot of big numbers about how much content is really out there. To keep up with this volume of information, our systems have come a long way since the first set of web data Google processed to answer queries. Back then, we did everything in batches: one workstation could compute the PageRank graph on 26 million pages in a couple of hours, and that set of pages would be used as Google's index for a fixed period of time. Today, Google downloads the web continuously, collecting updated page information and re-processing the entire web-l

This must be annoying for other high-resolution, remote-sensing data users since Google already has an exclusivity deal in place with DigitalGlobe, the other major civil satellite imagery provider. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. GeoEye-1 will orbit 423 miles above Earth, but it will be able to gather imagery with details the size of 4

NEWYORK (Agencies): US mobile service provider Verizon Communications Inc. is nearing an agreement with Google Inc. on a wide-ranging partnership, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation. The deal under discussion would make Google the default search provider on Verizon devices and give it a share of ad revenue, the paper said. The deal is not yet final and the two sides are still negotiating on key issues, such as Google's desire to save information from user cellphone searches, it added. The online search giant has reportedly been in talks with the number-two US mobile carrier over a possible alliance for almost a year now. Verizon and Google are hoping to conclude the discussions in the next few weeks and the mobile carrier eventually wants to put the Google search bar on the home screen of its phones, t

Credit Suisse has pushed its 12-month price target on Google from $800 to $900, causing the stock to regain some of the 125 bucks it's lost to the market roiling since Google grazed $750 earlier this month. Most of Wall Street believes in its heart that Google will see a dizzying $1,000 but few have written it down. Credit Suisse analyst Heath Terry believes Google will drive out all contenders and effectively own 100% of search, which he describes as a "natural monopoly," and that all advertising, including TV, radio and outdoor, will eventually go digital using Google as its "de facto operating system." He is figuring on upwards of 35% sales growth over the next five years and at least 30% earnings growth.

While the Microsoft bid to buy Yahoo is long gone, its results seem to be lingering, as both Microsoft and Yahoo have lost search market share to Google since the failed merger was announced nearly 6 months ago. The Hitwise numbers--showing Google with 70.7% market share--just underscore how far both Microsoft and Yahoo (nevermind Cuil) need to go in order to break into Google's search lead. That 70.7% number could be a turning point.
