Speculation is rising around a potential acquisition of Blinkx, a video search engine by either Google or News Corp (and possibly Yahoo!). Traffic to Blinkx has increased steadily over the past year – the market share of visits for the week ending May 10, 2008 is 10x higher than the same week in 2007. Much of this growth is being driven by new users, since 62% of the traffic to Blinkx during the same timeframe had not visited the website in the past 30 days.

There's near universal agreement that Steve Jobs is going to unveil the next iPhone at next week's Worldwide Developers' Conference keynote in San Francisco. Whether it's next week, next month, or next year, however, it raises a thorny semantic question: What will it be called? Most wags are dubbing it "the 3G iPhone," as it's certain to include the high-speed 3G (third-generation) wireless capabilities missing on the original model. But it's still going to be the second-generation iteration of the product--thus, "the 2G iPhone." Which one's correct?

Upon boot-up, Target: Terror appears to be a well-aged relic from the early '90s. Don't let the visual clues fool you, though. Despite an endless brigade of terrorists donning skintight leather pants, and digitized graphics a notch below those of Lethal Enforcers, Target: Terror is actually from this century. The arcade version was released in 2004, and the home port is a brand-new, nearly full-priced Wii game. Though Target: Terror starts out firmly in so-bad-it's-good territory, some debilitating control issues combined with extremely straightforward level design make the task of exterminating terrorists more excruciating than it should be.

The first sample for scientific analysis dug from the surface of the Mars has failed to make it to the onboard oven used to test for organic compounds and water. Mission scientists have been overviewing a picture taken by the lander after Phoenix's 8-foot long robotic arm dropped the sample on-target, but a sensor inside the chamber has reported seeing nothing falling into the oven. The regolith sample can be clearly seen scattered over the oven doors (pictured), and the vibration plate appears to be functioning. Mission control is currently trying to understand what went wrong, so sample analysis has been postponed, possibly for a few days…

Those following Research in Motion's upcoming device know that RIM is working on a next-generation touchscreen BlackBerry. Initially, those onlookers have speculated this to be RIM's strategy to compete with the iPhone, especially in the prosumer space and as the iPhone will be entering the corporate space with Exchange ActiveSync licensing from Microsoft. However, a closer look reveals the BlackBerry to have a touchscreen and sliding QWERTY keyboard, not unlike the HTC TyTN II.

Next Gen recently had a chance to sit down with Ubisoft and discuss the next addition to the Prince of Persia franchise. The team is excited that this isn't just another tired rehash of the same characters and setting, however, promising a new prince and open world adventuring on top of the already rich world of the previous games. "'We had a whole story with the previous trilogy, and Prince of Persia is a general universe where several different stories can unfold,' [creative director Jean-Christophe] explains. 'We're starting afresh, in the same universe, and we wanted to bring something new while keeping what worked before. We introduce a new Prince, who won't start as a prince, more a drifter and adventurer, lost in the desert. He'll be confronted by a lot of fantasy settings, as opposed to Assassin's Creed, which was more realistic.

Lebanon and Hanover, NH - For the second time in as many months, researchers have published a Medicare analysis comparing outcomes with drug-eluting stents (DES) vs bare-metal stents, showing that DES reduce the risk of repeat procedures but do not increase the risk of death or MI [1]. Just last month in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Dr Peter Groeneveld (Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, PA) and colleagues published an analysis of more than 75 000 Medicare patients treated with a Cypher DES within the first nine months of the device's FDA approval, showing that DES not only reduce the risk of revascularization procedures but also appeared to reduce the risk of death and MI [2].
