US military plans robot swarms

Weapons manufacturers are planning the next generation of military robots using designs based on creatures from the natural world.

Army Plans Swarms of Military Bug-Robots, Bringing Sci-Fi to Life

The rather beautiful looks of the robot in this image hide the fact that in reality it would be part of a swarm of military bots designed to creep into caves, bunkers and other hostile areas to grab intel on the baddies hiding within. Yes: it sounds like Minority Report, Dr Who and Robot Wars all rolled into one. And yes: it might just end up as a real machine, since BAE Systems has just been awarded $38 million by the Army Research Lab to head up the Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology project to develop the technology. The promotional video gives us a few more clues, despite its game-like looks, and if you don't like spiders then the image of one of the other potential drone bots will surely give you the heebyjeebies.

Palletizing robot

The intelligent M-410iB palletizing robot is the co.'s latest-generation robot designed for precise, high-speed and heavy-payload case and bag palletizing and depalletizing, layer handling, press tending, machine load/unload and parts transfer. The robot is a four-axes, modular system, with an electric servo drive and an integrated mechanical and control unit that maximizes the robot's performance and makes it ideal for limited floor space, the co. says. The robot can handle cases or bags weighing 100-kg at rates of 20 cycles/min for cases and 28 cycles/min for bags. In addition, with a maximum reach of 3,143-mm, the robot's large work envelope enables it to service multiple lines at one time. Available options include row and layer end-of-arm tooling for higher throughput applications and fork grippers for handling bags, trays, pails or

Pentagon Manipulating TV Analysts

gollum123 notes an extensive article from the NYTimes on the evidence that the military, since the time of the buildup to the Iraq war, has been manipulating the military analysts that are ubiquitous on TV and radio news programs, in a protracted campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration's war efforts. "Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity of military analysts on the major networks, is a Pentagon information apparatus... The effort... has sought to exploit ideological and military allegiances, and also a powerful financial dynamic: Most of the analysts have ties to military contractors vested in the very war policies they are asked to assess on air. Several dozen of the military analysts represent more than 150 military contractors either as lobbyists, senior executives, board members, or consultants.

US Scientists Convert Military Robot to Accept Wii Controls

A newly-issued report describes how scientists in the US have modified the controller used in conjunction with the Nintendo Wii games console to control military robots.

I, Robot (Blu-ray)

Based on the classic short stories of Isaac Asimov, I, Robot takes us to Chicago in the year 2035. Will Smith stars as detective Del Spooner, a technophobic cop who is called upon to investigate the mysterious suicide of Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), the head of robot and cybernetic research for US Robotics. When Spooner starts to believe the cause of death is not a suicide, his prime suspect is Sonny (Alan Tudyk), a robot who might have found a way around the Three Laws of Robotics.

America's Robot Army

Popular Mechanics explores the increasing level of reliance the US military has when it comes to robotic assistance. In the last few years, robot drones have reached an all-new level of sophistication, with several models already deployed in the field. Now, the next generation of robot helpers is nearing the end of its test phase. PM offers up a preview of what we could expect to see in the field within the next five years. "The MULE (Multifunction Utility/Logistics and Equipment) is roughly the size of a Humvee, but it has a trick worthy of monster truck rallies. Each of its six wheels is mounted on an articulated leg, allowing the robot to clamber up obstacles that other cars would simply bump against ... Barely a year old, the prototype is a product of the Army's Unmanned Ground Vehicle program, which began in 2001.

Incheon to Open Robot Land in 2012

Incheon has been going all-out to open its long-cherished plans to launch Robot Land in 2012. "At present, there is no particular problem to build Robot Land, the first of its kind in the world. We plan to establish a special purpose company (SPC) in October this year centering on companies that submitted a document promising investment to the city," Eugene Jun, director of the Robot Land Planning T/F Team, Incheon Metropolitan City, said. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy picked Incheon and Masan as the preliminary bidders for construction of Robot Land in November last year after screening 10 bidders. It selected Incheon as No. 1 preliminary bidder and Masan in South Gyeongsang Province as No 2 bidder.

Distance Record Broken for a Walking Robot

Narrative Fallacy writes "The Cornell Ranger robot has set an unofficial world distance record by walking nonstop for 45 laps — a little over 9 kilometers — around the Barton Hall running track in an event to to show off the machine's energy efficiency. Unlike other walking robots that use motors to control every movement, the Ranger emulates human walking, using gravity to help swing its legs forward. The Robot alternately swings two outside legs forward and then two inside ones and although the robot has no knees, it has feet that can be tipped up and down, so that the robot pushes off with its toes, then tilts its feet upward to land on the heels as it brings its legs forward. The Robot is steered by a hobby remote control which biases the steering to one side or another by lifting one of the four feet slightly.

US Plans "Disposable" Nuclear Batteries

holy_calamity writes "A US government program is in the works to design small nuclear reactors for use by developing countries. The work continues despite fears about security and nuclear proliferation. Plans include having reactors supplied with fuel by the US and other trusted nations, or to build reactors with their whole lifetime of fuel packaged securely inside — like a giant non-user replaceable radioactive battery.' '"

US Cyber Command Reveals Plans To Hit Back At Cyber Threats

CNet News.com is reporting that the Air Force's Cyber Command has just as much interest in offense as defense. "Air Force Cyber Command (AFCYBER), a US military unit set up in September 2007 to fight in cyberspace, is due to become fully operational in the autumn under the aegis of the US Eighth Air Force. Lieutenant general Robert J. Elder Jr., who commands the Eighth Air Force's Barksdale base, told ZDNet.co.uk at the Cyber Warfare Conference 2008 that Air Force is interested in developing its capabilities to attack enemy forces as well as defend critical national infrastructure. "

Stolen US Military Equipment Being Sold On eBay

I Buy These From eBay points out a Washington Post story about how stolen military equipment has ended up on eBay and Craigslist. Undercover investigators reported being able to purchase defense-related items with "no questions asked." Let's hope the sellers don't get their hands on any retired rebellious robots. From the Post: "Among the items purchased include two components from F-14 fighter jets, bought from separate buyers on eBay. The warplanes, now retired by the military, could easily be purchased and transferred to the Iranian military, which is seeking its components, the report said. Investigators couldn't determine where the sellers had obtained the F-14 parts. They also purchased from a Craigslist seller a used Nuclear Biological Chemical protective suit, other protective accessories as well as an unused chemical-biological c

US space shuttle Endeavour's robot arm moves the Japanese Pressurized Logistics Module from the shuttle's cargo bay to a temporary mount on the International Space Station (ISS). US and Japanese astronauts have entered for the first time a newly-installed Japanese module as engineers restored power to a Canadian-made robot that is key to future work in building the ISS.

US govt probes cigarette imports for violations vs Philip Morris USA patents

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - The US International Trade Commission (ITC) today initiated an investigation into whether several Internet-based cigarette retailers are selling imported cigarettes in the US that violate patents held by Philip Morris USA. The ITC investigation was requested by Philip Morris in early March, and could result in an order to ban cigarettes from the US that are found to violate patents held by the company. Any order issued as a result of the ITC investigation will become final 60 days after issuance unless overturned by the US Trade Representative's office. In its complaint, Philip Morris argued that many Internet retailers are promising to deliver brand name cigarettes at low prices, like Marlboro's, but instead deliver knock-off cigarettes.

US Does Suprisingly Well in Internet Survey

Herman's hermit writes "A new report from the World Economic Forum ranks the US number four when it comes to 'network readiness,' despite the fact that the same report has the US 17th broadband subscribers and 19th in bandwidth. 'While good news overall for the US, which is poised to take full advantage of information technology gains, the report probably won't change many minds when it comes to talking specifically about US broadband deployment.'"
