The Strange Case of the Army's Robot Thief

Back in July, the Army announced its biggest robot contract in its history. The so-called xBot deal would be worth up to $300 million and cover as many as 3,000 units — an unmanned surge. At first, the contract looked tailor-made for iRobot, the makers of those cute Roomba robo-vacuum cleaners, and military machines, too. But, as I discovered in my story for WIRED magazine, that was before the deal was discovered to some rather unusual items buried in the fine print. Before the accusations of intellectual property theft. Before the lawsuits, and the private investigators. Before the broken friendships, and the hidden players. You'll want to read this rather twisted tale of Pentagon millions gone awry until the very end.

Palletizing robot

The intelligent M-410iB palletizing robot is the co.'s latest-generation robot designed for precise, high-speed and heavy-payload case and bag palletizing and depalletizing, layer handling, press tending, machine load/unload and parts transfer. The robot is a four-axes, modular system, with an electric servo drive and an integrated mechanical and control unit that maximizes the robot's performance and makes it ideal for limited floor space, the co. says. The robot can handle cases or bags weighing 100-kg at rates of 20 cycles/min for cases and 28 cycles/min for bags. In addition, with a maximum reach of 3,143-mm, the robot's large work envelope enables it to service multiple lines at one time. Available options include row and layer end-of-arm tooling for higher throughput applications and fork grippers for handling bags, trays, pails or

Survivor Buddy, a Friendly Robot Rescuer

Roland Piquepaille writes "The St. Petersburg Times, Florida, reports that a well-known robot designer, Robin Murphy, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of South Florida (USF), 'plans to add a heart to robot rescuers.' As says USF, the goal is to develop 'a robot that will be a companion to a person who may be trapped after a car crash or in building ruins following an earthquake, or someone pinned down by sniper fire.' As said Murphy, 'robots can provide not only a sense of being a 'buddy' by playing soothing music or providing other entertainment, the robot also can be the audio and video link between survivor and family.' Murphy will develop this robot with some money coming from Microsoft. But read more for additional references and a picture of Murphy with her robot rescuers.

Robot Provides Versatility in Diverse Coating Applications - Posted 5/6/08

The high-speed EPX2050 robot from Motoman is designed to provide versatility and superior performance. The six-axis robot can be used for painting contoured parts such automotive car bodies and plastic component parts, agricultural equipment and aerospace parts. The robot features a Factory Mutual (FM) Class 1, Div. 1 intrinsically safe (explosion-proof) rating for use in hazardous environments. It has a 15 kg (33.1-lb) payload capacity, 2,054 mm (80.9”) reach, and ±0.5 mm (±0.02”) repeatability. The compact, highly flexible robot can be floor-, wall- or ceiling-mounted to provide layout flexibility. The robot is available with a hollow wrist that has a 50 mm (1.97”) diameter. A hollow wrist facilitates the mounting of spray equipment and interference between the hoses and parts/fixtures is avoided, ensuring optimum cycle time and

Goal to Nurture Global Robot Exhibition Bo...

Korea is poised to take off as the highest robot exhibition host country in the world through the International Robot Industry Show 2006 (iRIS 2006, www.robotworld.or.kr) which will be held from Oct. 18 through Oct. 22, 2006. ROBOTWORLD 2006's goal this year is to nurture itself as a worldwide robot exhibition both nominally and virtually by jumping over the International Robot Exhibition Japan which is held every two years.

Incheon to Open Robot Land in 2012

Incheon has been going all-out to open its long-cherished plans to launch Robot Land in 2012. "At present, there is no particular problem to build Robot Land, the first of its kind in the world. We plan to establish a special purpose company (SPC) in October this year centering on companies that submitted a document promising investment to the city," Eugene Jun, director of the Robot Land Planning T/F Team, Incheon Metropolitan City, said. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy picked Incheon and Masan as the preliminary bidders for construction of Robot Land in November last year after screening 10 bidders. It selected Incheon as No. 1 preliminary bidder and Masan in South Gyeongsang Province as No 2 bidder.

SCOTUS To Hear Small ISPs' Case Against AT&T

snydeq writes "The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear an antitrust case that alleges AT&T squeezed out small ISPs by charging too much for wholesale access to its phone network. The case, originally brought to US District Court in 2003, had been appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. But AT&T requested the case be heard by the Supreme Court on the grounds that prior conflicting appeals court decisions in this area should be resolved at that level. As part of the case, the Supreme Court will likely also ascertain whether AT&T could be held to violate antitrust law without setting its retail prices below its own cost."

Partner-type Personal Robot: would you leave your child with a robot?

PaPeRo is not only quite a bizarre name for a robot, but a potentially disturbing concept. The NEC-developed "Partner-type Personal Robot" is being tested in childcare.

Robot makes spinal medicine more precise

A robot in a lab at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is making spinal medicine more precise. The robot combines off-the-shelf hardware used in structural engineering that has been modified by University professors or grad students. Proprietary software drives the system. Since its development, the robot has been used frequently to study the performance potential of artificial spinal discs.

Robot with expressions

Nexi , the latest robot star from MIT's Media Lab, is symbolic of the widespread research interest in the future range of applications for personal robots and human-robot teamwork. Nexi is an experimental humanoid robot with a head that can display a wide range of facial expressions. Video cameras and microphones enable it to see and hear, and eventually Nexi will have mobility made possible by a Segway transporter type device.

Robot to Conduct Detroit Symphony

Honda Motor's Asimo robot will make its conducting debut next month with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Asimo is a humanoid robot able to walk forwards and backwards and climb stairs. Honda has been active in robotic research and design for over 20 years and Asimo, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, has been their robotics ambassador having made prior appearances here in the U.S. Asimo is scheduled to conduct the orchestra for one piece - "Impossible Dream" from the Man of La Mancha musical. Honda is not the only company that has musically inclined robots. Toyota has demonstrated a humanoid robot capable of playing the violin. Don't expect to rush out and get tickets for the May 13 concert as the show is sold out.

Army Plans Swarms of Military Bug-Robots, Bringing Sci-Fi to Life

The rather beautiful looks of the robot in this image hide the fact that in reality it would be part of a swarm of military bots designed to creep into caves, bunkers and other hostile areas to grab intel on the baddies hiding within. Yes: it sounds like Minority Report, Dr Who and Robot Wars all rolled into one. And yes: it might just end up as a real machine, since BAE Systems has just been awarded $38 million by the Army Research Lab to head up the Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology project to develop the technology. The promotional video gives us a few more clues, despite its game-like looks, and if you don't like spiders then the image of one of the other potential drone bots will surely give you the heebyjeebies.

Robot Controllers integrate within existing equipment.

May 30, 2008 - Supplied in chassis form, panel-mount robot controllers measure 250 mm deep and are designed to facilitate application planning, set up, operation, and maintenance of single or multiple robot cells. Each unit controls up to 4 robots, and separate modules specifically address robot control, axis drives, and process control. Technologies are included for optimization of motions for all robots and external axes as well as fully synchronous operation of multiple robots.
