justechn writes "Many of us have seen robots in the movies and wondered how long it would take for them to become a reality. Some of my favorites when I was a kid were Short Circut and Runaway. iRobot is a company that is striving to bring some of that technology home today. Their most popular and well known product is the Roomba vacuuming robot. The Roomba is great, after I finished my review of it and sent it back I went out and bought one. It does its best work picking up pet hair. They just came out with another robot called the Looj. The Looj is used to clean the rain gutters that go around your roof. If you have ever had to do this by hand you know how much of a pain it is. This robot uses a 3 stage auger to break up clogs and sweep all the debris out of your gutter.

The BigDog Quadruped Robot gets smarter

August 19, 2008 We’ve written about Boston Dynamics’s BigDog Quadruped Robot before, but felt it was worth updating given there’s an impressive new video out showing the incredible beastie doing its stuff. BigDog is a gasoline-powered, hydraulically-actuated quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs over almost any terrain. Watch BigDog get kicked heavily and recover, walk across ice, rocks and incredibly, carry twice its weight while doing it. The DARPA-funded robot is chock full of technology, squeezing gyroscopes, a bunch of sensors and its own stereo vision system into a weight of just 75 kg.

Robots + Air Hockey = You Lose

Just when you thought they’ve come out with almost every possible robot imaginable; robot monkeys, robot girlfriends, robot gas stations, robot bartender, robotic surgeons, killer robots…then comes the air hockey robot. I guess my next question is “why?”

The Saddest Robot Ever Made?

If you were expecting a robot that could emote "sad"...I'm sorry, that's not what this is. No, this isn't a robot that can cry either (we already have those creepy baby dolls for that). Unless you're the Mythbusters—then you build a robot dog, surround it with doggy blood, piss and shit and dump it in shark-infested waters. And a 16-foot ROBOT SHARK. With serrated metal teeth and the same pound-for-bone-crunching-pound bite as a great white. But! MechRC Robot Does Evolution of Robotic Dance Vid, Original Put to Shame

Incredible: what more's there to say? Incredible. Based on Judson Laipply's "Evolution of Dance Video," but way better. We get to see a robot doing Vanilla Ice's dance moves better than he did. A robot doing the "walk like an Egyptian" dance. The upcoming MechRC robot has been under development for three years and has 17 independently-controlled servos, and built-in audio. We're not discriminant enough in our miniature robot collecting to fully appreciate this Black OX robot from the series Gigantor, but even at our half appreciation it's still pretty incredible. Featuring 22 joints, LEDs, gyro sensors and accelerometer, Black OX only stands 17 inches tall, but he'll still manage to hold your eyes open while having his way with your wife/garbage disposal. Neurons Control Robot

Researchers at the University of Reading, in England, have developed a robot controlled by a biological "brain." Hundreds of thousands of rat neurons communicate via a multielectrode array--a dish with over 60 two-way electrodes that transmit signals between neurons and outside electronics--to control the movement of a wheeled robot. When the neurons receive signals that the robot is nearing an object, their output moves the wheels in an attempt to avoid obstacles. The researchers, led by neuroscientists Mark Hammond, Ben Whalley, and cyberneticist Kevin Warwick, suggest that by stimulating the neurons with different signals as the robot returns to a familiar location, they will be able to study how a brain stores data. Their goal is to eventually understand memory formation and disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Carbon nanotube thermal interface material (CNT-TIM) has come out ahead in a study by scientists in China. HB-LEDs that were heat sink coupled using CNT-TIM displayed a linear optical response over the input current range 150–900 mA compared with devices configured using commercial TIM, which peaked at 700 mA.

National Chiaotung University professor Sung Kai-tai, of the Department of Electronics and Control Systems, has developed a special robot capable of detecting when an elderly shut-in falls down, issuing a real-time visual or network notification to family members.
