Making a Better Robotic Hand It s All In the Palm: related news

Making a Better Robotic Hand: It's All In the Palm

What makes a hand so versatile? Fingers come to mind first -- but as designers of robot arms have learned, said neurobotics pioneer Yoky Matsuoka, the hand is just as much about the palm. Specifically, the palm's flexibility -- a quality I'd never even considered until she mentioned it and I tried to use my hand while keeping my palm stiff.

Augmenting Data Beats Better Algorithms

eldavojohn writes "A teacher is offering empirical evidence that when you're mining data, augmenting data is better than a better algorithm. He explains that he had teams in his class enter the Netflix challenge, and two teams went two different ways. One team used a better algorithm while the other harvested augmenting data on movies from the Internet Movie Database. And this team, which used a simpler algorithm, did much better — nearly as well as the best algorithm on the boards for the $1 million challenge. The teacher relates this back to Google's page ranking algorithm and presents a pretty convincing argument. What do you think? Will more data usually perform better than a better algorithm?"

Palm Launches Centro Into Singapore, Colombia & Malaysia

Palm has continued their plan of World Smartphone Domination. It seems that the Centro's popularity continues to grow as more and more worldwide markets launch Palm's latest smartphone offering. At last count, 22 of the countries or regions on Palm's worldwide website now show the Centro as being available. That's pretty impressive. But for all this love Palm is showing it's worldwide markets, how about spreading some love north of the border? Our poor Canadian friends seem to be getting left out in the cold...

Gen Y Workers Reinventing IT for the Better

buzzardsbay writes "We all know the complaints about young employees. They depend too much on their parents' money, they need constant hand-holding, they have no job loyalty, they demand more than they're worth, they disrespect older employees, and they're naive about corporate culture. But despite this conventional wisdom, there's growing evidence that the different working styles of Gen Y workers might be causing fundamental — and beneficial — changes in the way enterprises run, especially when it comes to IT. For example, they may show better judgment when making tech purchases and are often better with green IT initiatives This is a nice counterpoint to a previous story (and resulting incendiary comments) that dubbed young tech workers a risk to corporate networks.

Palm revenue falls 24 per cent

Palm Inc. fell short of Wall Street expectations yesterday when it reported a 24-per-cent drop in third-quarter revenue as it continued to push its lower-margin $99 (U.S.) Centro model. The company lost $31.5-million, or 30 cents a share, compared with profit of $11.8-million, or 11 cents, in the year-ago period. The company has struggled with stiff competition in the mobile phone market, including the release last June of Apple Inc.'s iPhone, and a company reorganization that started last year. Chief executive officer Ed Colligan said Palm's reorganization is working and emphasized that Palm sold 833,000 Centros in the quarter. Revenue for the quarter was $312.1-million, compared with $410.5-million a year earlier. PALM (Nasdaq) rose 17 cents to $4.

Moody's lowers Palm ratings to 'B2'

NEW YORK (AP) - Credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service downgraded ratings on Palm Inc. further into junk Monday, to "B2" from "B1," citing the Treo maker's fiscal third-quarter results. Moody's also left Palm's ratings on review for the possibility of further downgrades. On Thursday, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Palm missed analysts' expectations as its quarterly revenue dropped 24 percent year-over-year to $312.1 million and it swung to an adjusted loss of 16 cents per share. In a statement, Moody's said that though Palm has experienced record sales for its lower-priced Centro smart phone through wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp., "these gains weren't sufficient enough to counter declines in the company's aging Treo product line and traditional handheld devices.
