Leather clad robots will only pogo to punk rock: related news

Making robots even more hardcore, British roboticists have designed machines that will only dance to punk rock music. Standing 2 meters tall, padded in leather and decked in various punk scene insignias, the pogoing robots wait until they hear the familiar strains of anti-establishment rock before they start dancing. Is it just me, or do these things sound like they'd be a minor threat in the mosh pit?

Michael Shorrock, Sony's director of third-party relations, announced on the Playstation blog that he's been working with the major music game developers (i.e. Rock Band's Harmonix, Guitar Hero's Activision, and others) to ensure basic compatibility for peripherals between the games. Joystiq has a compatibility matrix that shows which devices work with which games. "...Rock Band 2's guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution. Conversely, Rock Revolution's drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2. In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar microphones. We're still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly.

Our science fiction reading group is discussing a shorter work this month, says Mark. It is Jack Williamson's novelette With Folded Hands, which appeared first in Astounding Stories in 1947. In the story a man who sells in mechanicals - basically robots - finds his business dying when new superior robots come along to compete. The new robots, streamlined black humanoids - are in every way superior to the robots he had been selling. But the new robots have more than superior technology; they have an ideology.

id Rock is ruling summer '08: His smash hit "All Summer Long" — which mashes up the super-familiar riffs of Lynyrd Skynryd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" — has charted on rock, country, top 40 and adult-contemporary radio. Powered by the single, his album Rock N Roll Jesus — which came out way back in October 2007 — has been climbing the charts, selling over 1.3 million copies and landing at Number Four in late July. "I thought I made a great record to begin with," says Rock, adding that he knew from the get-go that "All Summer Long" was destined to strike a chord. "The record company [Atlantic] wanted to put 'All Summer Long' out last fall, and we screamed at them, 'You cannot do that! We know it's a monster — we have to wait until next summer.

I can name many robots, but not examples of how robots are improving my quality of life. One reason for this is that even in 2008 much of my knowledge of robots is based on fiction. The world is full of robots large, small and microscopic; it is just that I am not aware of their importance to me.

DarkZero: The US gaming show X-play has shown Rock Band 2 being played for the first time on a recent episode of their show. Interestingly, the video showed a list of eleven songs from the games set list. Two of these songs were current DLC, and had a star beside them to signify so. The other nine however had a "2" icon beside them which seems to indicate they will be released as songs on the disc of Rock Band 2.

Robots and other automaton have long fascinated the imaginations of authors and artists. Since the first automatons appeared working in Hephaestus' workshop in "The Iliad," people have imagined what it would be like to live in a world of servants who demand neither food nor pleasure and exist only to serve. For a long time, such "perfect beings" remained the sole province of divinity and myth -- found only in the imperfect minds of their inventors.

"Not too long ago I was told how MTV Games' Rock Band 2 would be different from the first Rock Band. I was among a group of games reporters in a small theater at the Los Angeles studios of Electronic Arts. The makers of Rock Band 2 were giving a demonstration. Later, they let us play the game, but I was feeling too sick to jump on the drums, wield the guitar and sing. (I did feel well enough to block the game with my head).
