Palletizing robot

The intelligent M-410iB palletizing robot is the co.'s latest-generation robot designed for precise, high-speed and heavy-payload case and bag palletizing and depalletizing, layer handling, press tending, machine load/unload and parts transfer. The robot is a four-axes, modular system, with an electric servo drive and an integrated mechanical and control unit that maximizes the robot's performance and makes it ideal for limited floor space, the co. says. The robot can handle cases or bags weighing 100-kg at rates of 20 cycles/min for cases and 28 cycles/min for bags. In addition, with a maximum reach of 3,143-mm, the robot's large work envelope enables it to service multiple lines at one time. Available options include row and layer end-of-arm tooling for higher throughput applications and fork grippers for handling bags, trays, pails or

Justifying a Dispensing Robot

The assembly industry is vast in its scope and incorporates many independent disciplines for device manufacture. A primary segment of the assembly process that is naturally designated for automation is dispensing. Dispensing beads or dots of any kind of fluid is impossible to control manually and if it isn’t automated, the assembly process will invariable be compromised, causing rejects, rework, and the inevitable product degradation. Previously, the justification to automate a dispense application was made difficult by the high capital cost of automation. This is no longer the case and it is more difficult to justify not automating than to automate.

Distance Record Broken for a Walking Robot

Narrative Fallacy writes "The Cornell Ranger robot has set an unofficial world distance record by walking nonstop for 45 laps — a little over 9 kilometers — around the Barton Hall running track in an event to to show off the machine's energy efficiency. Unlike other walking robots that use motors to control every movement, the Ranger emulates human walking, using gravity to help swing its legs forward. The Robot alternately swings two outside legs forward and then two inside ones and although the robot has no knees, it has feet that can be tipped up and down, so that the robot pushes off with its toes, then tilts its feet upward to land on the heels as it brings its legs forward. The Robot is steered by a hobby remote control which biases the steering to one side or another by lifting one of the four feet slightly.

Help/Systems Releases Robot/REPLAY 3.0

Help/Systems has announced the release of Robot/REPLAY 3.0, the newest version of its companion software to Robot/SCHEDULE, the automated System i job scheduler. Robot/REPLAY works with Robot/SCHEDULE to automate interactive System i processes that include menu systems and 5250 screen applications that cannot be run in batch mode.

Doctors To Control Robot Surgeon With Their Eyes

trogador writes "Researchers from Imperial College London are improving the Da Vinci surgical robot by installing an eye-tracker, which allows surgeons to control the robot's knife simply by looking at the patient's tissues on a screen. Tracking the eyes can generate a 3D map, which in turn can make moving organs — like a beating heart — appear to stand still for easier operation. Other features include 'see-through' tissues on the surgeon's screen (so tumors can be seen underneath tissues) and 'no-cut' zones, places where the robot won't allow the surgeon to cut by mistake. Says ICL Professor Guang Zhong Yang, 'We want to empower the robot and make it more autonomous.'"

Incheon to Open Robot Land in 2012

Incheon has been going all-out to open its long-cherished plans to launch Robot Land in 2012. "At present, there is no particular problem to build Robot Land, the first of its kind in the world. We plan to establish a special purpose company (SPC) in October this year centering on companies that submitted a document promising investment to the city," Eugene Jun, director of the Robot Land Planning T/F Team, Incheon Metropolitan City, said. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy picked Incheon and Masan as the preliminary bidders for construction of Robot Land in November last year after screening 10 bidders. It selected Incheon as No. 1 preliminary bidder and Masan in South Gyeongsang Province as No 2 bidder.

Robot makes spinal medicine more precise

A robot in a lab at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is making spinal medicine more precise. The robot combines off-the-shelf hardware used in structural engineering that has been modified by University professors or grad students. Proprietary software drives the system. Since its development, the robot has been used frequently to study the performance potential of artificial spinal discs.

Robot to Conduct Detroit Symphony

Honda Motor's Asimo robot will make its conducting debut next month with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Asimo is a humanoid robot able to walk forwards and backwards and climb stairs. Honda has been active in robotic research and design for over 20 years and Asimo, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, has been their robotics ambassador having made prior appearances here in the U.S. Asimo is scheduled to conduct the orchestra for one piece - "Impossible Dream" from the Man of La Mancha musical. Honda is not the only company that has musically inclined robots. Toyota has demonstrated a humanoid robot capable of playing the violin. Don't expect to rush out and get tickets for the May 13 concert as the show is sold out.

ROBOT TO HELP YOU OPERATE REMOTE CONTROL

Fed up with increasingly hard-to-use remote controls? Researchers at Japan’s Toshiba have developed a small, talking robot that can learn how to do it for you. Instead of trying to remember which button to press on a remote control, users could simply ask the table-top robot to turn on the television or other appliances using its own infrared signal, Toshiba said, reports AFP. The 21-cm tall ApriPoco robot — which is in the development stage — is equipped with sensors that can detect infrared rays from remote controls
