Incheon to Open Robot Land in 2012: related news

Incheon to Open Robot Land in 2012

Incheon has been going all-out to open its long-cherished plans to launch Robot Land in 2012. "At present, there is no particular problem to build Robot Land, the first of its kind in the world. We plan to establish a special purpose company (SPC) in October this year centering on companies that submitted a document promising investment to the city," Eugene Jun, director of the Robot Land Planning T/F Team, Incheon Metropolitan City, said. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy picked Incheon and Masan as the preliminary bidders for construction of Robot Land in November last year after screening 10 bidders. It selected Incheon as No. 1 preliminary bidder and Masan in South Gyeongsang Province as No 2 bidder.

Open Source Robot for Household Tasks

bednarz brings us a NetworkWorld story about the development of a robot through an open source project. The objective of the project is to "take robotics from research into homes." Quoting: "One of its immediate goals is to build 10 robots and make them available to university researchers as a common platform that can be tinkered with and improved. Willow Garage will also supply 'an open-source code base integrated from the best open-source robotics software available,' President and CEO Steve Cousins said. In Cousins' video presentation, the first version of the robot could be seen vacuuming, picking up toys off the floor of a living room, taking dishes out of a dishwasher, and most importantly of all, using a bottle opener to crack open a cold, refreshing brew.

Global Open Source Census Launches to Count Enterprise Use of Open Source Software

Open source news roundup

Famously conservative, IT analyst Gartner has finally revised its predictions on open source software and now says that by "2012, more than 90 percent of enterprises will use open source in direct or embedded forms". In a report, The State of Open Source 2008, Gartner says that even "users who reject open source for technical, legal or business reasons might find themselves unintentionally using open source despite their opposition". Palletizing robot

The intelligent M-410iB palletizing robot is the co.'s latest-generation robot designed for precise, high-speed and heavy-payload case and bag palletizing and depalletizing, layer handling, press tending, machine load/unload and parts transfer. The robot is a four-axes, modular system, with an electric servo drive and an integrated mechanical and control unit that maximizes the robot's performance and makes it ideal for limited floor space, the co. says. The robot can handle cases or bags weighing 100-kg at rates of 20 cycles/min for cases and 28 cycles/min for bags. In addition, with a maximum reach of 3,143-mm, the robot's large work envelope enables it to service multiple lines at one time. Available options include row and layer end-of-arm tooling for higher throughput applications and fork grippers for handling bags, trays, pails or

Analyst Admits Open Source Will Quietly Take Over

ZDOne writes "In a few years' time, almost all businesses will use open source, according to analyst Gartner — which has up to now been fairly cautious, or downright negative, in its previous predictions about community developed software. '"By 2012, more than 90 percent of enterprises will use open source in direct or embedded forms,' predicts a Gartner report, The State of Open Source 2008, which sees a 'stealth' impact for the technology in embedded form: "Users who reject open source for technical, legal or business reasons might find themselves unintentionally using open source despite their opposition.'"

VCs regain interest in open source

Venture capitalists (VC) first discovered open source during the dot-com bubble at the turn of the millennium. When the bubble burst, open source was connected closely enough with its general failure that all but a handful of VCs lost interest. In the last few years, however, investor interest has started to return, due to growing acceptance of open source software and the success of existing open source companies. What now attracts investors to open source companies, VCs say, is the higher probability of innovative ideas and quicker time to market, as well as the ability to develop niche markets that were previously too small to develop profitably. If they see that the fundamentals for any successful business are in place, investors are finding firms founded on open source well worth considering.

Microsoft Gets a New Open Source Chief

mjasay writes "Microsoft just promoted Sam Ramji to run its growing Linux and open source operations. The former head of Microsoft's Open Source Software Lab, Ramji has a long history with open source, having built out large-scale open-source based applications while at Ofoto, and continuing to run applications like World of Warcraft and Office 2003 on WINE. Microsoft has been putting increasingly open-source savvy people in this role, starting with Jason Matusow and most recently employing Bill Hilf in the role. Ramji has made friends with many in the open-source business and development communities, but will his promotion spell any sort of an about-face for Microsoft in its patent policies? It's unlikely, but at least it demonstrates a step in the right direction.

Distance Record Broken for a Walking Robot

Narrative Fallacy writes "The Cornell Ranger robot has set an unofficial world distance record by walking nonstop for 45 laps — a little over 9 kilometers — around the Barton Hall running track in an event to to show off the machine's energy efficiency. Unlike other walking robots that use motors to control every movement, the Ranger emulates human walking, using gravity to help swing its legs forward. The Robot alternately swings two outside legs forward and then two inside ones and although the robot has no knees, it has feet that can be tipped up and down, so that the robot pushes off with its toes, then tilts its feet upward to land on the heels as it brings its legs forward. The Robot is steered by a hobby remote control which biases the steering to one side or another by lifting one of the four feet slightly.

Open Source Growing At an Exponential Rate

sipmeister writes "Two computer scientists who work for enterprise software giant SAP have shown that open source is growing at an exponential rate. Not only is the code base growing exponentially, but also the number of viable projects. Researchers Amit Deshpande and Dirk Riehle analyzed the database of open source startup ohloh.net and looked at the last 16 years of growth in open source. They consistently got the best fit for the data using an exponential model. Relating this to open source market revenue, Desphande and Riehle conclude that open source is eating into closed source at a non-trivial pace."

Is the Open Source Brand in the Right Hands?

"The methodologies of Open Source are not owned or guided by any one person. The closest thing we have are the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and support of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The OSI certifies what qualifies as an open source license. They have as of late also been adding the TM to the Open Source logo which is the equivalent of the Good Housekeeping seal of approval for open source software. While the Free Software Foundation maintains the Free Software Definition--to show clearly what must be true about a particular software program for it to be considered free software.

Microsoft releases the Open XML Format SDK April CTP

Earlier this month, Microsoft's Office Open XML received the official seal of approval from the ISO. Soon after, the standardization body took control of the standard. Nevertheless, as the SDK roadmap shows, Microsoft still has a lot of work to do. Microsoft's main task is the development and maintenance of the Open XML Format SDK (previously known as "Microsoft SDK for Open XML Formats"), which supports developers that need to manipulate Open XML packages. The full SDK also contains how-to articles and reference documentation for Open XML programming.

In the most recent push Microsoft is partnering with a small Silicon Valley company called SpikeSource to certify open source software on Windows 2008. "Despite growing Linux deployments, Windows Server remains quite popular for running open source applications. Open Source Census: Stand Up And Be Counted

Just how much open source software are people using? Getting hard numbers about open source usage is one of those tough-to-crack problems that doesn't seem to have a definitive solution -- partly because of the nature of open source itself. Self-reporting seems to be about the only way to get any numbers at all, unreliable and biased as that may be. But if self-reporting open source usage is made as easy as a couple of mouse clicks, why not do it?
