Armymil20080711165728The Army's older bomb-spotting robots are a little too flimsy, and too hard to control, to use in Iraq any more. So the military has given the 'bots new chemical-sniffing gear -- and a new mission: to help clean up hazardous sites in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Our science fiction reading group is discussing a shorter work this month, says Mark. It is Jack Williamson's novelette With Folded Hands, which appeared first in Astounding Stories in 1947. In the story a man who sells in mechanicals - basically robots - finds his business dying when new superior robots come along to compete. The new robots, streamlined black humanoids - are in every way superior to the robots he had been selling. But the new robots have more than superior technology; they have an ideology.

I can name many robots, but not examples of how robots are improving my quality of life. One reason for this is that even in 2008 much of my knowledge of robots is based on fiction. The world is full of robots large, small and microscopic; it is just that I am not aware of their importance to me.

Contractors' Support of U.S. Operations in Iraq: Spending on contractors doing Iraq-related work made up nearly 20 percent of the total funding for U.S. operations in Iraq between 2003 and 2007, according to a new analysis from the Congressional Budget Office. The CBO surveyed the $85 billion that the United States has paid to contractors working on military, security, reconstruction, and economic projects in Iraq during the first four years of the U.S. presence there.

"Motoman's EH-series 'Expert Handling' robots set a new standard for speed with a large robot," said a company spokesperson. "Compared to general-purpose robots, the EH-series offers up to a 22% increase in speed depending on model. These high-speed, high payload robots are specifically designed for high duty cycle material handling and offer superior performance in machine tending and material handling applications. Large work envelopes and the ability to bend over backwards, allow tools to be stored behind the robot, allowing better clearance for maintenance. Five EH models are available. These robots include an IP67 rated wrist for protection in machining environments.

August 8, 2008 Education has long been based around the three R's, but now for computer science students throughout the U.S., a fourth R is making ground - Robotics. A program that began in 2006 through the Institute for Personal Robots in Education (IPRE) using robots as the circuit breaker in introductory computer science courses is being expanded to 28 more high schools and universities. The grants give access to a share of $250,000 along with the tools that form the basis of the scheme: a book sized robot called Scribbler and its Bluetooth enabled add-on board known as Fluke, plus IPRE software and class text. Gizmag spoke to Dr. Tucker Balch, director of IPRE and professor of interactive computing at the Georgia Tech College of Computing, to learn more.
