IBM, Oracle and SAP were sued by a closely held company that accuses them of infringing its patents. Implicit Networks, based in Seattle, claims the three companies and Adobe Systems are violating two patents for computer-server software that performs faster security functions. The patents were issued from 1998 and 2001 applications. The complaint, filed July 15 in federal court in Seattle, targets IBM's Websphere Application Server, Oracle's Application Server and BEA WebLogic Server, SAP's NetWeaver and Adobe's JRun and ColdFusion products. Implicit seeks a "royalty" and didn't specifically ask that sales of any products be halted. Oracle is the world's second-biggest software maker, behind Microsoft. IBM is third in software. SAP, based in Walldorf, Germany, is the world's biggest maker of business-management software, and Adobe is the

"Given that customers mostly use the Help system when they are already frustrated by our software, we should always see to it that such errors do not exist in our help system. To do this, we will write a tool, HelpGenerator, that generates some of the boilerplate XML in the help system and checks the HTML and index files for the problems listed above. We will also build tools for displaying and testing the contextual help. We've re-engineered and improved these tools and present them in this article.

PainMeds tips a recent post in Secure Computing's research blog describing a new SQL injection attack that had infected thousands of MSSQL-based web servers by last weekend, turning them into malware delivery systems. The attack apparently rewrites the server's Web pages to include JavaScript which pushes malware to the visitor as if it were from the genuine site. Sites using Sybase might possibly be vulnerable, as it uses the same exploited syntax that MSSQL does. The post includes an example of the attack. Unlike most malware attacks, this one appears to originate from the site the user is actually visiting. From the blog: "'Similar to phishing, this attack takes advantage of the website visitor's trust in the site they are visiting. Instead of phishing for information, however, malware is sent to the client, which the client has a high

Adobe has announced the immediate availability of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 software, the photographer's toolbox for managing, adjusting and presenting large volumes of digital photographs. With new enhancements such as dual-monitor support, radical advances in non-destructive localized image correction, and streamlined search capabilities, Lightroom 2 is an upgrade that Adobe promises will simplify photography from shoot to finish. AJAX has become so popular because it allows a browser to initiate a request to the server to receive or push data. Pushing data from the server to a client at an undetermined interval has been a problem that AJAX has never been able to deal with well. Simple examples of applications that AJAX does not handle well due to the need for server push are chat applications, live temperature updates, tailing log files, and calling long running queries. Comet can solve this problem. Comet is a web application architecture that allows a web server to send data to a browser without any need for the browser to request the data. Three common examples of allowing a server to push data to a browser are: polling, long polling, and streaming. Long polling and streaming are two strategies that are considered Comet.

Adobe Lightroom 2 box About a year and a half ago, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 launched to a fairly positive reception, especially given the shortcomings in its main competitor, Apple's Aperture. But now that Apple has addressed many of the major problems with Aperture, Lightroom now faces some stiff competition in the RAW workflow arena. The recent release of Lightroom 2.0 is Adobe's attempt to strike back at Aperture 2.0, and we've taken a close look at the new release to see just much it advances Adobe's game.

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) today announced the company is teaming up with search industry leaders to dramatically improve search results of dynamic Web content and rich Internet applications (RIAs). Adobe is providing optimized Adobe(R) Flash(R) Player technology to Google and Yahoo! to enhance search engine indexing of the Flash file format (SWF) and uncover information that is currently undiscoverable by search engines. This will provide more relevant automatic search rankings of the millions of RIAs and other dynamic content that run in Adobe Flash Player. Moving forward, RIA developers and rich Web content producers won't need to amend existing and future content to make it searchable -- they can now be confident it can be found by users around the globe.

adobe-photoshop-mobile.jpgAdobe has announced plans to take its Photoshop brand to mobile phones, albeit not with image-editing software along the lines of the popular PC/Mac application. Instead, it’s planning to launch Photoshop.com Mobile in beta, allowing people to upload their cameraphone snaps to Adobe’s Photoshop.com site. Besides uploading, the app will let them see thumbnails of the photos in their online gallery, as well as browsing albums created using Adobe’s Photoshop Elements software. However, the mobile app will initially lack more advanced features like tagging, titling and captioning. However, Adobe is missing a trick by only making the beta available for Windows Mobile handsets, starting in late September with Samsung Blackjack, Motorola Q and Palm Treo phones.

The affordability of digital cameras and SD cards and widespread distribution of tutorials and techniques of photography have transformed many crowds of consumers into amateur digital photographers. They buy 16GB SDHC cards to store the memories. They read the tutorials and techniques for taking good pictures. And they know that post-processing matters in photography. Sadly, they also realize that learning how to use a full blown version of Adobe Photoshop would take up a lot of their time and resources just for a few features that they'd probably need. Not to mention that the professional Adobe Photoshop version, in terms of costs, is out of range of most consumers. Adobe actually saw this trend and created a product just for the amateur photographers: I'm talking about Adobe Photoshop Elements -- for simplicity in use and attractive pri
