But the two were swimming in a section of the reservoir that was not being used. Had that section been in use, water bureau officials say they would have had to dump millions of gallons of water from that pool and possibly shut off the reservoir.

Well, this shouldn't surprise very many people, but following on plenty of earlier studies that have made it clear that most people don't do much to protect their privacy, a new study out of the UK pretty much states the obvious: people say they're concerned about privacy, but they sure don't act that way. The study found 84% of users say they carefully guard their info online -- but when tested, 89% of people actually did give away info in the same exact survey. To be fair, the specific set of questions was first asking people if they carefully guard their income info, followed later by a question asking them what income bracket they fell into. It's reasonable to think that some folks believe that the bracket is not the same as giving away their actual income -- which is what the first question implied.

Klaus Schmidt writes "Virgin Galactic today unveiled their WhiteKnight Two mothership, called 'EVE.' It is designed to carry the smaller SpaceShip Two into space. The rollout represents another major milestone in Virgin Galactic's quest to launch the world's first private, environmentally benign, space access system for people, payload and science. Christened 'EVE' in honor of Richard Branson's mother — Sir Richard performed the official naming ceremony — WK2 is both visually remarkable and represents ground-breaking aerospace technology. It is the world's largest all carbon composite aircraft and many of its component parts have been built using composite materials for the very first time. At 140 ft, the wing span is the longest single carbon composite aviation component ever manufactured.

wooferhound points out recent news that the Cassini probe has completed its original four-year mission and is beginning a two-year extended mission, which was authorized earlier this year. Cassini's first mission brought us a treasure trove of information about Saturn and its various moons. The new mission will target two of those moons in particular for further study: Titan and Enceladus. Quoting: "The spacecraft is extremely healthy and carries 12 instruments powered by three radioisotope thermoelectric generators. Data from Cassini's nominal and extended missions could lay the groundwork for possible future missions to Saturn, Titan or Enceladus. [The two moons] are primary targets in the two-year extended mission, dubbed the Cassini Equinox Mission.

Electronic Arts Inc. said yesterday it will drop its hostile US$2-billion bid for rival video-game publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and instead pursue private talks with the company that created the popular Grand Theft Auto series and other video games. While shares of Take-Two fell 4% on the spectre that EA might walk away, or come back with a lower bid, analysts said a deal was more probable now that friendly talks were in the offing. EA, maker of Rock Band, Madden and other games, said yesterday John Riccitiello, its chief executive, and Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two executive chairman, held talks over the weekend. "I think Take-Two ... is going to negotiate a dollar [per share] higher and then claim victory," said Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

After two solid days of Zelda gaming, N-Europe is as confused as ever as to which title brings the greatest gaming to the fore. We personally feel that the two titles are just too different to compare. It's like comparing Mario 64 to Paper Mario, both feature jumping but that's about it. What we DO know is that it created a divide. Many loved Majora for it's brashness, fresh direction and dark tone whilst others loved OoT for its innovation, immense world and breaking the mould mantra. Whatever the result we've thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and so we are going to wuss out and say each title cannot ever be pitted against each other. They are both fabulous titles in their own right. But both are very different beings indeed!

Anti-Globalism points out a story at the German magazine Spiegel profiling two small US companies that monitor terrorist networks online — IntelCenter and SITE Intelgroup. "[Founders of the two companies] Venzke and Devon are two of the most prominent 'terror trackers' worldwide. In the United States, and increasingly in other countries, the term refers to a community of people who spend their days analyzing traces that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations leave behind, especially on the Internet. The two Americans are essentially digital trackers in the age of globalized terrorism. IntelCenter and SITE Intelgroup are the companies that Venzke and Devon, respectively, have founded. They enjoy a strong reputation within the relatively small community of terrorism experts.

Study reveals TVs as popular as MP3 players for music Parks Associates has released the results of a new survey in the US and Canada that reveals some interesting facts about how people listen to music. Not surprisingly the results indicate around two thirds of all people in both countries with broadband connections regularly play music on their PC and half that many use portable media players, such as Apple's iPod. More surprising was the revelation that as many people seem to use their TV for music as own MP3 players.

Recently a user, Lori Drew, was charged with a felony for the heinous crime of pretending to be someone else on the Internet. Using the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Lori was charged for signing up for MySpace using a fake name. "The access to MySpace was unauthorized because using a fake name violated the terms of service. The information from a "protected computer" was the profiles of other MySpace users. If this is found to be a valid interpretation of the law, it's really quite frightening. If you violate the Terms of Service of a website, you can be charged with hacking. That's an astounding concept. Does this mean that everyone who uses Bugmenot could be prosecuted? Also, this isn't a minor crime, it's a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment per count.
