Arguments I will point out again, and again if necessary. Amazon has a choice. They can choose to lower or completely stop discounting books that offer them only a 20-39% discount. They can accept the fact that, on the bookselling side of this equation, they are a retailer and accept 40% off list, standard, like every other bookseller. In other words, they can quit trying to put the brick-and-mortar bookstores out of business and play fair. They apparently haven't chosen to be fair, to compete on a level playing field. In my mind, this puts their honesty in question. On the printing side of things, Amazon can quit acting like a two-bit thug and clean up BookSurge's act, the quality issues, that sort of thing. They could strive for the best, most consistent quality and lower their prices a notch, and compete--fairly and honestly.

Taiwan fuel cell makers persist despite high costs, patent fees

The region remains one of the staunchest advocates of fuel cells as an alternative power source. According to the Bureau of Energy at the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, annual output value of fuel cells on the island is projected to reach $130 million by 2011, and will hit $424 million by 2016. The Bureau also forecasts that Taiwan will claim 5 percent of the worldwide market for fuel cells by 2020, with output value to reach nearly $3.26 billion.

Canon Patents Fuel Cell Powered Digital Camera

A recently discovered patent of Canon’s shows that the company is looking towards developing fuel cell technologies for its Digital SLR cameras. The patent is a bit long winded, as are most, but it appears that there would be a main compartment on such a DSLR that would contain the hydrogen fuel and it would feed this fuel to other parts of the camera. Independent power generation would then take place in parts like the lens attachment, the flash, and the main camera body, although a unified power monitoring system would be in place to increase power efficiency.

Digital Camera Powered By a Fuel Cell

An anonymous reader notes a development from the world of photography that could spread to notebooks and cell phones. Canon has filed for a patent on a fuel cell powered DSLR. The fuel cell would power not only the camera body but also all accessories attached to it, doing away with the need to power flashes (for example) with AA or other batteries. The patent covers other electronic devices generally, but is clearly directed toward DSLR cameras, given the diagrams and examples used. "Canon continues to push its fuel cell development by devising a method for powering not only the internal DSLR body electronics, but also external components such as lenses and hotshoe flashes."

Fuel subsidies better spent re-training fishers: UBC researchers

Skyrocketing fuel costs could lead to long-term sustainable fisheries if governments redirect fuel subsidies currently given to fishing fleets and use them to invest in re-training for fishers, says University of British Columbia fisheries economist Rashid Sumaila.

Greener Skies: Quiet, Fuel-Efficient Airplanes Race in NASA Challenge

This past weekend, a NASA-sanctioned 400-mile "personal air vehicle" race was held in Santa Rosa, CA, to see who had created the quietest, most fuel-efficient plane that's still reasonably fast. Those involved hope pushing these ideas forward will make personal airplanes cost effective someday. These PAVs run as quiet as a pickup truck while averaging a fuel efficiency of 25 to 30 miles per gallon. Four planes showed up for the challenge and $100,000 in prize money was awarded, though the most intriguing craft of them all, a modded DA-20 that runs partially on biodiesel, was unable to compete because of a faulty sensor. In the end, the big winner was the Pipistrel Virus, a two-seater with tech-happy features such as three GPS modules, terrain visualization screen and a rocket-propelled parachute that deploys in the event of a mid-air

Google StreetView Spies Burning Home, Does Nothing (Probably Microsoft Guy's House)

Google StreetView has been a peculiar bird since its inception earlier this century. It's been blamed for voyeurism, the trampling of privacy rights, and other infractions, but then again it's also been known to capture a few nose pickers or two—so it's a wash as far as I'm concerned. Today, we received word it has some hot new imagery on its hands, literally. As in, this burning house on Eagle Point Drive in sunny Sherwood, Arkansas. [Google StreetView via J-Walk Blog]

Drivers won't trade extras for fuel

Why is it that in all of these articles about fuel-efficient vehicles, no one ever points out the fact that we have had cars in the past with better fuel economy than those you list in the seven sippers article?
