imageMaybe it was the bad economy. Maybe it’s the back-to-school season or an attempt to generate more interest ahead of Christmas shopping period. In any case, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) hopes to see a sales boost now that its XBox console is now cheaper than rivals Nintendo Wii and Sony (NYSE: SNE) Playstation3, FT reports. Microsoft, which consistently ranks third in console sales behind its two rivals, is cutting prices in the U.S. and Japan. In the U.S., Microsoft’s 360 Arcade console, which doesn’t have a hard drive, is getting a 29 percent price cut—from $279.99 to $199.99. By comparison, the Wii sells for $249.99. Microsoft’s 60Gb hard drive model will now go for $299.99, which is being lowered by $50. That makes it $100 cheaper than a similar PlayStation3.

After limping along for several months, jewelers in the U.S. market were looking forward to Mothers Day in May. This important calendar event was supposed to be an excellent opportunity for merchants to boost their sales. Unfortunately, it did not happen. Jewelry sales, both for the total product category and for U.S. specialty jewelers, rose by the smallest amount so far this year.

Sales are going up, up, up! Apple, for a very short time, used to include the number of times an iPhone app had been downloaded right there on the App Store for everyone to see, but the count was quickly removed. The only way developers could check on sales after that was to wait for the monthly sales report from Apple, the first of which won't be available until August. Thanks to tips from our readers and a poster on Apple's support forums, however, developers can now log in to iTunes Connect to view daily and weekly sales data.

Web sales as a proportion of total sales have increased tenfold in the past five years at UK-based apparel and housewares retailer N Brown Group plc, whose roots are in catalogs aimed at consumers 30 and older. My parents just sold a U.S. property. My father is a foreigner but my mother is a U.S. citizen. They filed a FIRPTA (Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act income tax withholding) stating exactly that. Although the sale price of the property is more than $300,000, the closing agent didn't withhold the 10 percent tax. They don't want to file a joint U.S. tax return, as if they do, my father's income will be subjected to U.S. taxation. How should they file their tax regarding this property sale?

When it comes to US music sales, the iTunes Store has been tops for a while now and will probably stay there for the near future. The UK iTunes Store has been doing well too, although the abandoned price cut in July wasn't exactly good news for buyers. Even if the prices are a bit high, though, UK consumers have been snapping up tracks, and according to telegraph.co.uk these sales have helped offset a decline in CD sales.

MrKaos writes "Western Digital seems to be preparing for the onslaught of solid-state drives set to impact its market by developing a 20,000 rpm hard drive. Similar to the VelociRaptor line of drives, the new drives are speculated to be offering lower capacity as a tradeoff for faster seek and write times." This report out of Taipei is the only word on the rumored WD 20K drive. It's said to be a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" enclosure, for efficiency of cooling — the arrangement the Register enjoyed poking fun at when the 10K drive was upgraded last month.
