This generally is true because larger plans have access to a wider variety of investment options and economies of scale. As reported in a recent Insider newsletter, Watson Wyatt used 5500 form data to calculate the median rate of return for plan sponsors that sponsored both a defined benefit plan and a 401(k) plan, each with at least 100 participants.

Google has donated $300,000 to Oregon State University to build more capacity at its open source computing lab, which means the company has now given a total of $750,000 to the lab, the university said in a statement. The money will further the work of the university, which has already played a role in some of the largest open source computing projects, including the Mozilla Firefox browser, parts of the One Laptop Per Child project, and the Linux Foundation’s main infrastructure.

Ars Technica is covering an interesting pilot program taking place in Ottawa, CA. 400 homes are being outfitted with fiber optic cables, however, the "last mile" of fiber is going to be sold outright to the homeowners rather than providing internet at a monthly fee. "In the future, it could become commonplace for homes to come with 'tails'. These customer-owned, fiber-optic connections would link them to a network peering point. Without the expense of rolling out last mile infrastructure to every home, many more ISPs could afford to serve a given neighborhood by running wiring to the peering point, leading to more competition and lower prices. In a surprising move, Sprint supposedly removed smartphones from their competitive SERO (Sprint Exclusive Referral Offer) plans (now refuted.) SERO plans uniquely include data usage in the plan fee and reflect a substantial savings from conventional plans. Either this was a case of bad timing of a system bug with their online SERO ordering or Sprint was actually kicking around the idea of limiting its SERO offerings, but regardless, both current and future SERO customers can breathe a sigh of relief. From lowest tier to highest, the 8GB and 16GB iPhones are priced at €80 (~$130)/€160 (~$250), €1 (~$2)/€80 (~$130), and €1 (~$2)/€20 (~$30), offered under a two-year contract.
