An anonymous reader writes "In honor of the Tour de France's start today, Google has used it's awesome Street View technology to compile amazing Tour de France route views. A great description of the technology that went into creating this can be found in this LinuxDevices article. At least, I'm assuming these are the cameras — Google acknowledged using Elphel cameras for book scanning and 'capturing street imagery in Google Maps.' And from the article, the cameras have come along way from the days when crazy cat ladies and other privacy freaks scuppered Street View in San Francisco a couple of years back."

There's an old joke about the French surrendering to anyone and anything, but one place France never surrenders is in the courtroom where money is involved. If you're a foreign firm doing business in France and your business model rubs an established French business the wrong way, the French court system isn't shy about whacking you with the big stick. EBay is the latest company to take a beating in Paris. They've been ordered to pay LVMH, the maker of luxury brand goods like Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior, $61 million dollars for allowing counterfeit copies to be sold on EBay's auction site. C'est la vie? Non! Cest la guerre!

P aul McCartney has told Quebec nationalists "to smoke the pipes of peace" over their opposition to his free concert celebrating the city's 400th anniversary. Several artists and politicians have questioned McCartney's participation in the weekend birthday celebrations of French-speaking Quebec City because of his British roots. But McCartney said he was unmoved by their claim that his presence evokes painful memories of Britain's conquest of New France in 1759. Since the celebrations of the city's four centuries of French culture kicked off in July, Francophones have criticized elements of the festivities they feel are too English. The ex-Beatle said he had been working on expanding the lines of French he used in the 1965 hit "Michelle."
