Air Force Suspends Cyber Command Program

AFCyber writes "The Air Force on Monday suspended all efforts related to development of a program to become the dominant service in cyberspace, according to knowledgeable sources. Top Air Force officials put a halt to all activities related to the establishment of the Cyber Command, a provisional unit that is currently part of the 8th Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, sources told Nextgov. An internal Air Force e-mail obtained by Nextgov said, 'Transfers of manpower and resources, including activation and re-assignment of units, shall be halted.' Establishment of the Cyber Command will be delayed until new senior Air Force leaders, including Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz, sworn in today, have time to make a final decision on the scope and mission of the command.

Huge Internet Security Hole Demonstrated - Bigger than recent DNS fiasco?

Wired News reports on a new vulnerability that could allow troublemakers to intercept traffic on a scale that would make even AT&T and the NSA proud. Two security researchers have demonstrated a new technique to stealthily intercept internet traffic using a vulnerability in the internet routing protocol BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). The tactic, which one hacker claims is bigger than the recent DNS exploit, lets an attacker monitor unencrypted internet traffic anywhere in the world, and even modify it before it reaches its destination.

Dutch Town Lays Air-Purifying Concrete

eldavojohn writes "In an effort to combat air pollution, a Dutch town has paved some of its streets with air-purifying concrete. It contains a titanium dioxide-based additive that utilizes sunlight to turn car exhaust into harmless nitrates. It was shown to do this in a lab and now the scientists are interested in just how much this will affect the air quality around the road. They will sample the air quality by a normal road and by this newly paved one."

Air Traffic Controller Lands Stricken Plane By SMS

There's a new reason to hope that the no-cell-chatter bill now under consideration in the US doesn't bring with it a Faraday-cage mandate, and that reason is landing safely. Reader ma11achy writes with an excerpt from a scary story (with an SMS-based happy ending) from the Irish Times: "Five people on a flight from Kerry to Jersey received mobile phone text instructions from a quick-thinking air traffic controller when he guided them in to a safe landing at Cork, after the plane lost all onboard electrical power, communications and weather radar soon after take-off from Kerry airport."

dnstop: Monitor BIND DNS Server (DNS Network Traffic) From a Shell Prompt

"Log file can give out required information but dnstop is just like top command for monitoring dns traffic. It is a small tool to listen on device or to parse the file savefile and collect and print statistics on the local network's DNS traffic. You must have read access to /dev/bpf*. bpf (Berkeley Packet Filter) which provides a raw interface to data link layers in a protocol independent fashion. All packets on the network, even those destined for other hosts, are accessible through this mechanism."

Encrypted Traffic No Longer Safe From Throttling

coderrr writes "New research could allow ISPs to selectively block or slow down your encrypted traffic even if they cannot snoop on your transmitted data. Italian researchers have found a way to categorize the type of traffic that is hidden inside an encrypted SSH session to around 90% accuracy. They are achieving this by analyzing packet sizes and inter-packet intervals instead of looking at the content itself. Challenges remain for ISPs to implement this technology, but it's clear that encrypting your traffic inside an SSH session or VPN connection is not a solution to protect net neutrality."

Nuvation Unveils Air Hockey-Playing Robot

Are you a lonely computer geek with no friends to play air hockey with? Don't fret! Nuvation, an engineering services company, designed a robotic arm that can play air hockey. According to the company, the robot beats human opponents 90% of the time. The video of it in action is interesting, but in my opinion, the human opponent sucks. I, on the other hand, am an air hockey god, and so I'm not as impressed, as I'd surely destroy it. Nevertheless, it's still pretty cool.
