Interview Panasonic

PanasonicPanasonic interview at PMA : Panasonic entered the market with the Lumix digital compact camera line only a couple of years ago. We have seen Panasonic grow and the last generation of digital cameras is without a doubt impressive. Bas de Meijer sat down with Ichiro Kitao, Product Planning Manager Panasonic Optical Group, to ask him several questions. Besides the new compact camera line that was introduced just before the PMA kicked off, there are a few models that stand out, such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 and the Lumix FX35 digital cameras. Last year's introduced L10 DSLR camera is the second DSLR camera in the assortment that was introduced conform Panasonic's planning. Bas de Meijer's interview with Ichiro Kitao;

Stanford Researchers Develop 3D Camera With 12616 Lenses

"The camera you own has one main lens and produces a flat, two-dimensional photograph, whether you hold it in your hand or view it on your computer screen. On the other hand, a camera with two lenses (or two cameras placed apart from each other) can take more interesting 3-D photos. But what if your digital camera saw the world through thousands of tiny lenses, each a miniature camera unto itself? You'd get a 2-D photo, but you'd also get something potentially more valuable: an electronic "depth map" containing the distance from the camera to every object in the picture, a kind of super 3-D. Stanford electronics researchers, lead by electrical engineering Professor Abbas El Gamal, are developing such a camera, built around their "multi-aperture image sensor.

Ricoh R8 Digital Camera

A new camera from Ricoh is always a bit of an event. While most other manufacturers launch half a dozen new cameras at once, Ricoh tends to increase its small but specialised range by one model at a time. The last Ricoh camera I reviewed here was the unusual Caplio GX100 in February, but a more relevant comparison for today's camera is the outstanding Caplio R7 which I reviewed in October last year, not long after its launch. Today I'm taking a look at its successor, the new Ricoh R8 (they've dropped the Caplio name this time).

Ricoh R8 digital camera

If you look at the range of digital cameras available at the moment you'll probably notice two things. At the competitive end of the market, there's a proliferation of great value compact cameras, designed for people who want to carry an instant snapper in their pocket. These have been getting easier to use while getting more and better features at a lower price. At the other end of the scale lies the enthusiast's camera. Even among amateur photographers, these are increasingly becoming DSLR (digital single lens reflex) models, with heaps of manual settings for getting the most out of your camera. This is one of the big growth areas in digital photography, with prices falling rapidly. But the latest entry-level devices still cost a lot more than most compact cameras.

Ricoh on Tuesday announced its newest digital camera, the G600, which is water- and dust-resistant. To earn a MIL Standard 810F rating, the 5x optical zoom lens is all internal so it never protrudes from the body, making it invulnerable to damage when dropped. The 10-megapixel G600 is otherwise optimized for harsh conditions, with big buttons that can be operated with gloved hands and a rating for use in temperatures ranging from 14F to 104F. The new camera is also able to shoot movies and take photos at under up to 3.3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.
