FTC OKs Google Deal, Issues Guidelines

In late December, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved search engine Google's controversial merger with online marketing giant DoubleClick and simultaneously released voluntary privacy guidelines for online advertising practices. Google profits surge by 30% despite fears of slump in online advertising

Search engine giant Google increased its profits by nearly a third in the first quarter of the year, despite fears over a downturn in online advertising. Google reported earnings of $1.31 billion (656 billion), beating market forecasts. The US-based internet group also said that UK revenues stood at 402 million in the first three months of the year, representing 15 per cent of the group's total sales a slight increase from 14 per cent in the previous quarter. Google has seen its shares hammered recently due to concerns over its prospects amid an economic slump. Recent online industry figures in America had suggested that fewer people were clicking on Google's links to advertising as the economic slowdown in the US started to bite. Google makes money from advertising links, but only when web surfers click on them.
