Early this morning Adobe launched a public beta of Photoshop Express, the newest member of the Photoshop "family." While Photoshop itself is the 800lb gorilla of professional image editing, the family also includes Photoshop Lightroom for pro photographer workflows and Photoshop Elements for hobbyists. This newest member is geared toward casual, "connected-generation" users. These casual users aren't going to drop $700 for Photoshop proper, and may hesitate to spend the $100 for Elements. Photoshop Express is definitely priced right to attract new customers: absolutely free.

Like a well-fed amoeba, Adobe's Photoshop has split in two for 2007, producing its own child, Photoshop CS3 Extended. Think of the £755 (ex. VAT) Extended version as Photoshop Heavy (as opposed to Photoshop Light); it's basically the same application with some extra capabilities and bundled scripts targeted at video post-production tasks, 3D texture-map editing and scientific image analysis. At about £200 (ex. VAT) more than Photoshop CS3, Photoshop CS3 Extended is a significant upgrade decision — one which we're not sure will entirely satisfy the relevant users.

Mark Hamburg began work for Adobe in 1990 and helped develop Photoshop versions after the 1.0 release. After Photoshop 7 shipped, he left his position as chief architect of Photoshop to begin development (by himself) of what we would later call Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Hamburg is responsible for many groundbreaking features in both Photoshop and Lightroom but, thankfully for Adobe, his timing for leaving the company is not horribly inconvenient. The Lightroom team now consists of over 50 people, and Lightroom 2.0 has recently hit public beta status.

To upgrade or not to upgrade — that's generally the question when confronted with a new version of Photoshop such as the £485 (ex. VAT) Photoshop CS3 (upgrade from £139 ex. VAT). And, at least for 2007, the answer is an emphatic 'yes', if only because of several extremely useful new enhancements that should benefit most users, as well as potential improvements in performance that would benefit all. Furthermore, if you traditionally use Photoshop for video post-production tasks, 3D texture-map editing or scientific image analysis, there's a whole new — and pricier (£755 ex. VAT, upgrade from £329 ex. VAT) — version of Photoshop for you, dubbed Photoshop CS3 Extended.

A free photo service from Adobe. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on todayÂ’s technology. Adobe makes the most popular image editing software Â…Photoshop. It is also very expensive. There are also the more consumer oriented and priced Photoshop Elements programs. And now the company is out with a Web based tool, Photoshop Express, that lets you edit and store photosÂ….and itÂ’s all free. You donÂ’t get all of the features of Photoshop or Photoshop ElementsÂ….but what you get are some pretty sophisticated, yet simple to use image editing functionsÂ….without the need to download software at all. After youÂ’ve signed up, you can upload pictures from your PCÂ…or it can import from sites such as Photobucket, Facebook or Picasa. The editing is non-destructiveÂ…meaning that whatever changes you make to a photoÂ…converting it to black and white, cro

Free Photoshop? You betcha - Adobe has launched the Photoshop Express (PE) Beta, and online version of their popular Photoshop sotfware. PE allows you access to many of Photoshop's most often used tools - resize, tint, distort, sketch, and more. PE is entirely web-based, and after the free registration allows users to upload, store, edit, and share 2GB of their own pics. Users can access the software from any computer in the U.S., independent of operating system or browser. Officially, Adobe does not guarantee access to citizens outside the U.S., but you're welcome to try. Photoshop Express is compatible with Picasa, Facebook, and Photobucket.

I really like Photoshop Elements 6, a pre-release beta copy of which I've had in hand for several weeks now. The new user interface is nicer to look at, all my favorite PSE features are still there, some refined and improved, and there is new stuff as well. In general, Photoshop Elements 6 is a leap ahead of the already excellent Elements 4 for Mac, and convincingly reestablishes PSE as the class of the field in resasonably-priced image-editing applications. Considering that it gives you pretty much everything a non-professional user would ever utilize from Photoshop CS, Elements has to be considered a rip-roaring bargain at $89.95.

"We all knew this day would come sooner or later, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting, does it? Today, Adobe releases Photoshop Express for the web. Now before you go berserk, let us exercise some journalistic caution — it’s not everything you can do in Photoshop fit into a web browser. Not nearly. No layers here, no fancy pants masking. But for 95% of your photos, it offers pretty much all you need to fix ‘em up, and it does it with style. Whether adjusting exposure, white balance, or hue, touching up blemishes, or distorting your image, Photoshop Express provides an easy slider and thumbnails to give you an instant preview of your image at various settings. Even undo is better than you’d expect. Being on the web, this Photoshop’s made for sharing.

EB presents a new Adobe Photoshop plug-in for EB GUIDE Studio that enables direct access to designs from Photoshop. With the Photoshop plug-in, you can now import graphics into EB GUIDE Studio for further editing. This saves time for both designers and developers and thus accelerates the development of human machine interfaces. The data transfer process takes place in two steps: The script first exports layer and graphical material from Photoshop which is then stored temporarily in an XML file. From the XML file, the EB GUIDE Studio plug-in then generates graphical control elements, which the user can utilise as buttons, sliders, animated widgets or full views in EB GUIDE Studio.
