Phase One's Capture One 4

Capture One 4 (CO4, if you will) is a raw file processor/organizer that shares many features, albeit with its own nomenclature and workflow, with products such as Apple’s Aperture and Adobe’s Lightroom. Competitively priced at $129 (for a two computer license), owners of Phase One’s Capture One LE can upgrade to 4 free of charge, and Capture One PRO users can use CO4 free until the next generation of PRO is available. Those curious can try out the program for free for 30 days by visiting the company’s website (www.phaseone.com/4). I have worked with raw images in most camera company proprietary software

Olympus tinkering with 360-degree camera and lens

Who needs a 360-degree camera and lens? Olympus thinks surveillance mavens will eat this up, this camera with eyes in the back of its head, capturing images of all that takes place within its all-encompassing line of sight. It works like the Google Maps Street View Dodeca 2360 camera, shooting in all directions, but this one has just one lens instead of an array of 11. It’s also can’t shoot 360 degrees vertically like Google’s camera can; this one takes in a 360-degree horizontal image with a 180-degree vertical view, good enough for us because we don’t have much need to shoot feet and ceilings.

Buying a DSLR Is Buying a Camera System!

This will be the third in the series of articles for those who are new to the DSLR (Digital Single Reflex Lens) camera system, including those who are upgrading from a compact camera to DSLR, and for those who already own a DSLR camera, but who wish to improve the camera's performance by buying more accessories.

PowerBuilder Editorial: The State of the State

Back in 2002, Sybase announced their four-phase approach toward adding .NET support to PowerBuilder. Phase 1 was the implementation of web services in PB9 and Phase 2 was the release of DataWindow.NET, which was packaged with PB 10. Phases 3 and 4 were the more significant phases. In Phase 3, Sybase added a number of .NET target types to PowerBuilder 11 and added support for calling non-visual .NET assemblies from PowerScript. The 4th phase will be completed in PowerBuilder 12 and involves “...support for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) ... as well as full support for visual controls and drag-and-drop programming with .NET within the IDE”.1 We’re at the mid-point between the release of PowerBuilder 11 (phase III) and the release of PowerBuilder 12 (phase IV, which should complete .

SLR Viewfinders: An Overlooked Feature

"Ever since photography went digital, the popularity of photography has soared. In the past I'd maybe bump into no more than three random people holding a SLR camera even in an area considered to be "photogenic". Now, it's common to see someone proudly slinging a DSLR over their hip even on public transport. With such popular appeal it's also no wonder the Internet is now full of all kinds of sites discussing digital photography, and all new DSLR camera releases scrutinised heavily. Still, one feature that's rarely bought up on the Internet chatter of these hardware discussions is a simple and not very alluring sounding specification: The camera's viewfinder. Now, while it's not quite as sexy to talk about compared to ISO 204,800 (a favourite topic of many discussions) or 5 gigapixels, it's still something that's important.

TrueCrypt 6.0 Released

ruphus13 writes "While most of the US was celebrating Independence Day, the true fellow geeks over at TrueCrypt released version 6.0 of TrueCrypt over the long weekend. The new version touts two major upgrades. 'First, TrueCrypt now performs parallel encryption and decryption operations on multi-core systems, giving you a phenomenal speedup if you have more than one processor available. Second, it now has the ability to hide an entire operating system, so even if you're forced to reveal your pre-boot password to an adversary, you can give them one that boots into a plausible decoy operating system, with your hidden operating system remaining completely undetectable.' The software has been released under the 'TrueCrypt License,' which is not OSI approved.

Google Calendar Now Supports CalDAV, Syncs Natively With iCal (But Not iPhone)

One of my personal sticking points for keeping my online life totally synced is now one step closer to being easier—Google Calendar now supports CalDAV and can sync natively with OS X's iCal without a third-party add-on. But there's a huge hitch—as of now, I see no way to sync events created on my iPhone back into a Google Calendar, as you can't create an event in a CalDAV calendar directly on the iPhone. Damn, almost there—looks like I can't throw out BusySync just yet. But if you've found away around this limitation, please share in the comments. So close! [Lifehacker]

Low-Impact Mating System for Docking Spacecraft

A document describes a low-impact mating system suitable for both docking (mating of two free-flying spacecraft) and berthing (in which a robot arm in one spacecraft positions an object for mating with either spacecraft). The low-impact mating system is fully androgynous: it mates with a copy of itself, i.e., all spacecraft and other objects to be mated are to be equipped with identical copies of the system. This aspect of the design helps to minimize the number of unique parts and to standardize and facilitate mating operations. The system includes a closed-loop feedback control subsystem that actively accommodates misalignments between mating spacecraft, thereby attenuating spacecraft dynamics and mitigating the need for precise advance positioning of the spacecraft.
