Nintendo DSi to Include a Digital Camera: related news

Nintendo DSi to Include a Digital Camera

Say what you will about Nintendo, but one thing's for certain; it's always been dominant in the mobile gaming market. The Nintendo DS is no exception, with 77.5 million sold worldwide, nearly 23 million in Japan. Compared to only 41 million Sony PlayStation Portables worldwide, with 10 million in Japan, the Nintendo DS is the sure winner thus far. However, for five straight months, the PSP has outsold the DS in Japan, and that trend is not sitting well with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. Iwata is hoping to reverse that trend with its newsest iteration, the Nintendo DSi. Not only is the DSi thinner with a bigger screen, but it also sports a digital camera and an audio player. The DSi will go on sale in Japan on November 1st for 18,900 yen ($180), but won't be abvailable overseas until next year.

Nintendo DSi to Arrive In 2009

Recently, Nintendo has launched the DSi in Japan, selling over 170,000 units of the handheld gaming system. Overall, the company shipped around 200,000 systems to Japan to go to their retailers at launch, and it seems like the large number really was made up for in sales. Even though the DSi sold well in Japan and handheld gaming systems are increasing in popularity, Nintendo does not plan on releasing the system to the western market until as late as summer of 2009. Many holiday shoppers will possibly pick up the DS Lite instead, though some will wait for a later date and buy the largely anticipated Nintendo DSi that features a slimmer profile and a built-in camera.

Nintendo DSi Software Is Region Locked, So Don't Import One Unless You Know Japanese

Nintendo has confirmed that both downloadable games and DSi-exclusive software will be region-locked, meaning Japanese games won't play on an American DSi and vice versa. Regular DS games, on the other hand, will continue to be universal, and you'll still be able to play Japanense imports of regular DS games on say, an American DSi. That sucks, because it means if you import a DSi from Japan to skip the longass wait for the US version, you're going to be stuck buying Japanese DSi games forever, not to mention killing the import market. Maybe there's hope yet lurking in that SD card slot though. [CVG]
