Nikon today rolled out their new full-frame D700 digital SLR. The best way to describe the D700 is that it's a D3 in a smaller, lighter package. It has the same FX-format sensor, stunning image quality, super-fast performance, and build quality as Nikon's flagship model, all in a body just a bit larger than the D300. Here's the full list of details:

NikonNikon D700 Sample Photos : During a business trip to Monaco I had some time to shoot sample photos with the new Nikon D700. Unfortunately the sun was shining with high temperatures, so high ISO photos were out of the question. As soon as I have finished the full Nikon D700 test, high ISO photos will be part of the review. The new Nikon D700 was introduced the first of July and is for many Nikon enthusiast and SLR photographers quite a surprise. 12 Megapixels, compact body and the same image sensor as the professional Nikon D3; some pretty interesting specs! Currently I have a full production model in the office, at the same time there is also a second Nikon D700 tested by Kai Thon, DIWA's test manager, at the DIWA Labs in Norway.

Perhaps the worst kept secret of any recent announcement Nikon has now officially revealed the compact, professional, twelve megapixel, full-frame (FX format) Nikon D700. From the outside the D700 is virtually identical to the D300, albeit for its larger 'full frame' viewfinder, internally it's almost identical to the D3, except for a slightly slower shutter (five frames per second up to eight frames per second with the MB-D10 battery grip). By comparison it also includes several function improvements over the D3 including Image Sensor cleaning ('sensor shake'), more flexible 'hard button' programming, virtual horizon in Live View and different DX mode indication on the focusing screen. The D700 also becomes the first professional Nikon DSLR to sport a built-in flash.

The Nikon D300 is currently the darling of the DSLR market. Nikon has built the D300 on a Magnesium frame with weather sealing that makes it the top crop-sensor model, or DX format in Nikon lingo, in their current lineup. It is really a Pro model, but with pricing at the upper end of the prosumer market. This formula has worked well for Nikon. The D300 is selling very, very well. We were not immune to the charms of the D300 as you saw in our blog

Before the announcement of the Nikon D700, Nikon faithful already had arguably the most impressively stocked collection of pro-level photographic tools on the market: the highly regarded D3 anchors the top of the line with its full-frame sensor, and if you can settle for a smaller APS-C sized imager, the much more affordable D300 does a lot of what its big brother does for a lot less money. Between these two ends of the high-end spectrum, however, there's a fair bit of distance (and a price gap of around $3,000) to fill in the space occupied almost exclusively in terms of price and features by archrival Canon's 5D – an aging but affordable and very competent full-frame camera for under $3,000.

Released yesterday, the D700 is a 12.1 megapixel digital SLR camera with a wide range of features borrowed from Nikon's flagship D300 model. The camera has Nikon’s FX-format sensor with an ISO range of 200 to 6400, as well as continuous shooting abilities at up to five frames per second — which can be bumped up to a spectacular 8fps with the battery pack attached. The camera has its own proprietary 51-point autofocus system, with a Scene Recognition System that ensures optimum focusing in all situations. Also released was Nikon’s SB900 Speedlight flash unit, sporting an extensive LCD panel and the ability to accept firmware upgrades through supported Nikon cameras — a first for any manufacturer. In addition, the flash can be used wirelessly to provide creative lighting for any scene.

If you liked the image quality and spectacular low-noise/low-light shooting ability of the Nikon D3 but wanted something smaller and less expensive, you're going to find the new Nikon D700 ($2,999) very interesting. With the same 12.1-megapixel full-frame FX CMOS sensor as the D3 but with a camera body that's 20 percent smaller and lighter than that digital SLR, the much buzzed about D700 is stripped down in size but is designed with the same pro-level performance.
