New York, NY, July 9, 2008--PhotoShelter Inc., the leading online destination where more than 37,000 photographers sell stock photography and access powerful solutions for e-commerce and image storage, today released a statement from CEO Allen Murabayashi, commenting on the recent partnership announcement between Getty Images and photo sharing website flickr. Murabayashi directly linked the strategic move by Getty and flickr to the positive, tangible impact that PhotoShelter's business model is having on the stock photo industry, and cautioned photographers to carefully scrutinize the details of Gettys contract terms before agreeing to exclusive sales rights and ceding as much as 80% of every sale to Getty.

Seattle-based Getty Images, which is now owned by private equity firm Hellman & Friedman, has inked a deal to feature photos from Yahoo's popular online photo sharing site, Flickr. According to Flickr, Getty Images' photo editors will identify photos that they would like to feature in the collection and reach out directly to members of the Flickr community as part of new initiative. Details of the program and its launch were not announced. Flickr said the deal will focus on creating a collection of royalty free, rights ready and rights managed photographs.

imageIn a way, Flickr is kind of the unofficial stock photo service of new media, so this makes sense… the Yahoo-owned photo site now has a deal with stock photo giant Getty that will see some Flickr users have their photos resold through the company. Exact details of how it will work financially weren’t announced, but basically Getty will hand select certain Flickr users, inviting them to be part of a special collection at GettyImages.com. Those pictures will then be available for editorial or paid licensing opportunities. Flickr GM Kakul Srivastava told PDNOnline the licensing revenue would be split between Getty and the user, with Flickr getting none directly, but that the two companies also have a business relationship.
