Now the popular photo sharing site allows you to upload video clips One feature that many folks have asked for from Flickr, the popular photos sharing site, is the ability to upload short video clips along with still images. Just about any digital camera produced today allows you to also take short video clips. Flickr now allows you to upload 90 second or less clips and share them on your Flickr photostream. The idea is that with a limit of 90 seconds it is just long enough to post a clip of your child's birthday song, or a students science experiment, but not too long. The limit is set to encourage the uploading of user generated content and not the republication of exisiting video content. As with your Flickr photos, visitors can comment and link to the video, just as they can with still images.

Techdirt points to a New York Times report on how companies that were previously trying to force YouTube content offline are now finding a way to profit from the clips. CBS, Universal Music, Lionsgate and Electronic Arts have all stopped pushing YouTube to pull videos of their content, instead working with Google to "claim" the content and profit from advertising revenue. One Lionsgate exec shows a significant amount of insight from an industry that has traditionally believed suing the hell out of fans (even for circumstantial use on YouTube) is part of a smart business model:

In the early days of the World Wide Web, the battle cry of successful sites was "Content is king!" Web pages needed to be content heavy to gain rankings on the search engines and draw visitors, and the content needed to be updated regularly to bring those visitors back. As the technology evolved and business models changed, functionality and interactivity gained importance in capturing clicks. Portals provide the most manageable framework for organizing and presenting both functionality and content. But, "most manageable" isn't the same is "easily manageable" and content is still a key part of a successful portal. For portal developers and administrators, this means that the content for a portal will grow, both in source and type.

YouTube makes it easy to post videos on the Web and on Web pages. Plus, by using YouTube, you don't have to worry about bandwidth charges to your Web server. But there are drawbacks to YouTube. It can be difficult to share private videos and if you make your video public, you could end up with comments that are disagreeable as well. Then there are the rules that you have to agree to to use YouTube. Finally, with the latest ruling against Google, YouTube might not be as palatable for posting Web videos - especially with your privacy at risk.

There are lots of different types of websites out there - product sites, marketing brochure sites, educational sites, etc. But the ones that people keep coming back to are content driven websites. As Website-Content-Providers.com explains, content driven sites are websites that are filled with content about a specific theme. imageIn a way, Flickr is kind of the unofficial stock photo service of new media, so this makes sense… the Yahoo-owned photo site now has a deal with stock photo giant Getty that will see some Flickr users have their photos resold through the company. Exact details of how it will work financially weren’t announced, but basically Getty will hand select certain Flickr users, inviting them to be part of a special collection at GettyImages.com. Those pictures will then be available for editorial or paid licensing opportunities. Flickr GM Kakul Srivastava told PDNOnline the licensing revenue would be split between Getty and the user, with Flickr getting none directly, but that the two companies also have a business relationship. Ultimately, it doesn’t sound like this will be a major revenue boost for the site, which gets most of its mone

While not enough people recognize it, the real purpose of copyright law is to provide an incentive for the creation of more content. The government felt that there was a market failure, where not enough "content" would be produced without a limited monopoly, and thus, copyright was born. However, that happened back in the day when creating content wasn't easy. You pretty much had to go through a professional process. These days, thanks to new technologies, creating content is exceptionally easy -- and thus, a big part of the very basis for copyright no longer makes sense. We're drowning in content -- and it's not because of the "incentive" of copyright. There are plenty of incentives for creating content these days and very few have anything to do with copyright.

After several months in beta, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is going wide with content site Knol. While the site appears to be a challenge to Wikipedia, Google stresses that the articles and entries have a professional quality. The way Google is maintaining this difference between Knol and Wikipedia is that all entries must have be identified by the writer’s name. While Wikipedia does rely on editors and the community to police the site, Google is trying to go a little further. The articles on Knol can have multiple authors, which under Google’s structure, is called “moderated collaboration.”

Google is in the midst of a $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Viacom for YouTube violations of copyright infringement. Google hopes that a recent ruling in the favor of video site Veoh will mean good things for the YouTube case. In both the Veoh case (filed by porn company Io after the companys adult films were found on the Veoh site) and the YouTube case, the defendants believe that they are not responsible for hosting liabilities because of a safe harbor clause in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. These sites are simply service providers that have to do minimal things to make sure that copyright isnt violated. The court has ruled that this is true in the case of Veoh. Google believes this helps its case against Viacom but Viacom says that there are enough differences between YouTube and Veoh that it will contin
