Robocup 2008 Droids Cooperate Like Real Soccer Team, With Fewer Hissy Fits

Miniature humanoid robots are getting more impressive by the day: this video shows the Darmstadt Dribblers team in action in the recent 2008 Robocup. And if you notice, they're really playing like proper autonomous soccer teams. It's the first year that three-on-three playing action has happened, and thus required some nifty role negotiation and info exchange over Wi-Fi. That's in addition to avoiding obstacles, finding the ball visually and trying to score goals. Okay, so that opposing team needs a better goalie, but at least watching this robotic version of the beautiful game means you get to see less diving and hissy fits at the referee. Impressive stuff, no? [YouTube.—Thanks Stefan]

Thomson wins appeal of software patent verdict

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A federal appellate court in Philadelphia on Monday overturned a jury's finding that Thomson Reuters Corp. infringed a patent for trading municipal bonds in Internet auctions. Jurors awarded MuniAuction Inc. $38.4 million in damages in October 2006 after finding New York-based Thomson Corp. willfully infringed MuniAuction's patent. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that decision, finding that Thomson didn't infringe on any patents. U.S. District Judge Gary Lancaster had said the jury believed Thomson deliberately copied MuniAuction's software and tried to portray itself as a group of small companies, rather than the billion-dollar business it is. doubled the damages and tacked on prejudgment interest in July 2007.

Is eBay Expanding Their Finding 2.0 in the U.S.?

This am, I logged into my eBay (EBAY) account (buying focused account) and found that I had been opted into the 'new search experience'. This is Finding 2.0, which is based on the Magellan search engine. (The engine behind eBay Express). This is the engine that has been in the playground for a while, so nothing new to report other than my guess is that after rolling this out in the UK and other countries, they are now starting to turn the dial on in the USA. At eBay Live, I heard they had 10% of users in the new experience, so my guess is they have bumped that up to 20-40% at this point.
