Icon"While Firefox 2 used less memory than it's predecessor, Firefox 1.5, we intentionally restricted the number of changes to the Gecko platform (Gecko 1.8.1 was only slightly different than Gecko 1.8) on which Firefox was built. However, while the majority of people were working on Firefox 2/Gecko 1.8.1, others of us were already ripping into the platform that Firefox 3 was to be built on: Gecko 1.9. We've made more significant changes to the platform than I can count, including many to reduce our memory footprint. The result has been dramatic."

bunratty writes "Firefox 3 Beta 5 was released today. This last beta release sports performance-boosting improved connection parallelism. Not only has 'the memory leak' been fixed: Firefox now uses less memory than other browsers. This is not only according to Mozilla developers, but CyberNet and The Browser World as well. As for the Acid3 test, Firefox 3 Beta 5 scores only 71/100 compared to 75/100 for Safari 3.1 and 79/100 for the latest Opera 9.5 snapshot. The final release of Firefox 3 is expected in June."

"We all use the internet. I'm sure anyone reading this has also heard of Firefox but do you know about all the others? Konqueror is a nice browser based on the KHTML rendering engine, the same great engine Safari and WebKit use, which means it supports a few things (like drop-shadows on text) which no other browsers do. Then there's Epiphany, which will display pages the same way Firefox does, but which fits the look 'n feel of GNOME environments a bit better than Firefox 2.0 does (Firefox 3, however, fits very well). There are also lightweight browsers like Kazehakase you might like. Firefox is by far the most extensible, though..."

Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 31 months. Building on the previous release, Gecko 1.9 has more than 12,000 updates including some major re-architecting to provide improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Firefox 3 has been built on top of this new platform resulting in a more secure, easier to use, more personal product with a lot more under the hood to offer website and Firefox add-on developers.

Though Firefox 2.0 has been going strong for web users, the newly improved beta version of Firefox 3.0 has a few features that we think would sit well with users, one of which is a fully functional zoom feature for both images and text as displayed on the web pages. Of course, the promise of an improved memory usage is one of the big things everyone's hoping for, given that Firefox has been known to be a huge resource sink.

An anonymous reader writes "Wired.com is reporting that the Firefox browser has been unknowingly distributing a trojan with the Firefox Vietnamese language pack. Over 16,000 downloads of the pack occurred since being infected. This highlights a risk on relying on user-submitted Firefox extensions, or a lack of peer-review of the extensions, many of which receive frequent upgrades."
