Firefox 3 - you going to get it?

There is a goal to get a world record for downloads of Firefox 3. Spread Firefox is a site dedicated to, well, spreading Firefox. I've loved Firefox since version 0.93. It was so much better than Internet Explorer and the other alternatives that I couldn't imagine using anything else. But, then Firefox's memory leaks went from annoying me to ticking me off; I started having real stability problems with it on both Windows and Linux; and security holes started appearing far more often. I was about to switch to Safari on Windows and MacOS and Konqueror on Linux, when Mozilla got serious about not just fixing, but rebuilding Firefox. Now, Firefox 3 release candidate 1 was released early. Based on my quick look at it, I may end up sticking with Firefox after all.

Firefox Market Share Hits 19%

Mozilla Corp. released its updated browser, Firefox 3.0, last month with a push to set a new world record for most number of downloads of a new release in a 24 hour period. Now results show that Firefox posted a 0.6% market share increase in June to 19% of the overall browser market. Safari and Opera also eked out small gains in June as well. These increases come at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which fell to 73%. The bulk of Firefox's increase came following the June 17 release of Firefox 3.0. All three alternative browsers hit all time highs with IE hitting a corresponding record low. If these trends continue, Firefox is expected to break 20% market share this month.

Mozilla releases Firefox 3.0rc1 preview for testing

Mozilla has released a preview release of Firefox 3 Release Candidate, the next generation Firefox browser. Designed for "testing purposes only," the company emphasizes that preview releases are published to collect feedback from Web developers and our testing community before advancing to the next stage in the release process. Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which offers improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Version 3 offers one-click site info, malware protection, a new Web Forgery Protection page, new SSL error pages, anti-virus integration, easier password management, simplified add-on installation, a new Download Manager, resumable downloading, and a new Firefox theme for Mac OS X along with Growl for notifications.

Firefox Appears Ready to Crack 20% Share Next Month

CWmike writes "Mozilla's Firefox browser is on pace to hit the 20% market-share mark next month. Mozilla marketing VP Vince Vizzaccaro didn't pin all of Firefox's increase on a change last month to its update dialog, he did note the new approach. "Mozilla has implemented a change in Firefox 3.0 [Release Candidate 1] where the installation now has a checkbox that defaults to making Firefox your default browser," he explained. He refused to ding Mozilla for the practice. 'The option is clearly displayed and labeled, unlike Safari, which misleadingly labeled the Safari install as an "update" [but has] since correctly changed to an 'install.' However, this practice is a break from the traditional practice browsers employed of defaulting this option to off.

Firefox 3 and 3.1 Get (Roughly) Dated

Mozilla has announced a rough date for final release of Firefox 3 as well as a date-driven release schedule for Firefox 3.1. Firefox 3 is now slated for "sometime in June," while Firefox 3.1 is scheduled for the end of the year.

You may remember a couple months ago there was some contention whether Safari or Firefox had the fastest JavaScript performance. Apple had claimed Safari 3 was the fastest when compared to Firefox 2, though improvements in Firefox 3 betas had narrowed or eliminated that gap. Zimbra, a company that makes a web-based collaboration suite, has now performed some new benchmarks that show Safari on top. Zimra's results, based on testing using its own tools, shows Safari 3.1 with a clear lead over Firefox 3.0.

According to a draft schedule discussed at a recent meeting, Mozilla wants to have the first Firefox 3.1 developer preview ready by July, then move to a beta by August. The schedule slates final code delivery in the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2009. A month ago, when Mozilla first started discussing Firefox 3.1 internally, Mike Schroepfer, the company's vice president of engineering, said the upgrade's target ship date was the end of 2008. If Mozilla holds to that plan, Firefox 3.

The technique enables security software to protect a PC against malware which isn't yet in the antivirus definition file, by comparing whether the new malware is similar to an old virus. Wolfe reports that Microsoft has been awarded U.S. patent 7,376,970 for "System and method for proactive computer virus protection," but that McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro, and Kaspersky have all been selling products implementing proactive virus protection for years before Microsoft even filed for the patent. Invisible Porn & a Vampire Virus

I have Webroot Antivirus with Anti-Spyware, and it is currently running a sweep. The problem is that it seems to be scanning porn-related files that I can’t find on my PC. I don’t LOOK at porn, and don’t know where they could have come from. They appear to be saved in a folder called C:\docs & settings\user\!\PORN NAMES. I can not find the “!� folder. What’s more, something is making my computer REALLY slow. The sweep has also detected a virus titled Troj/Agent-HEG. The sweep has found this virus in the past, and when I remove it, it comes back about two weeks later. Please help me to (a) get the porn off my computer (if it’s even there) and (b) remove the virus for good. I’m hoping these two actions will speed my PC up again! Thanks for all your help! Molly
