About 17,000 users of Vietnamese-language Firefox may have been wondering why their systems keep pulling up these video game cheat Web sites at random, for the past two months. But Mozilla didn't know what was up until last Tuesday.

An anonymous reader writes "Wired.com is reporting that the Firefox browser has been unknowingly distributing a trojan with the Firefox Vietnamese language pack. Over 16,000 downloads of the pack occurred since being infected. This highlights a risk on relying on user-submitted Firefox extensions, or a lack of peer-review of the extensions, many of which receive frequent upgrades."

I've loved Firefox since version 0.93. It was so much better than Internet Explorer and the other alternatives that I couldn't imagine using anything else. But, then Firefox's memory leaks went from annoying me to ticking me off; I started having real stability problems with it on both Windows and Linux; and security holes started appearing far more often. I was about to switch to Safari on Windows and MacOS and Konqueror on Linux, when Mozilla got serious about not just fixing, but rebuilding Firefox. Now, Firefox 3 release candidate 1 was released early. Based on my quick look at it, I may end up sticking with Firefox after all.

Mozilla Corp. released its updated browser, Firefox 3.0, last month with a push to set a new world record for most number of downloads of a new release in a 24 hour period. Now results show that Firefox posted a 0.6% market share increase in June to 19% of the overall browser market. Safari and Opera also eked out small gains in June as well. These increases come at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which fell to 73%. The bulk of Firefox's increase came following the June 17 release of Firefox 3.0. All three alternative browsers hit all time highs with IE hitting a corresponding record low. If these trends continue, Firefox is expected to break 20% market share this month.

Although it's not intended for public consumption, a new build of Firefox 3 Alpha 5 (code name Gran Paradiso) is available for download from Mozilla. In this release, add-ons created for Firefox 2 may not work. For end users, Firefox 2 remains the latest public version. The final public release for Firefox 3 is not expected until autumn 2007.

Mozilla posted the first Firefox 3.0 release candidate last week. Today Mozilla announced it has tagged ten high-priority bugs in release candidate 1, three of which were deemed critical. Since it is still gathering feedback from users, Mozilla has not reached a decision on whether to release 3.0 as is or go to a second release candidate. Of the ten, eight affect Firefox on all the major operating systems and two were specific to Linux only. Mozilla said testing on the bugs is ongoing so that fixes would be available in case a decision is made to go with RC2.

I got a request today to update the chart I posted back in February comparing the online audience for Yahoo! Search and Google.com given yesterday's announcement about a advertising deal between the two. Last time I did the analysis I found an age gap - with Yahoo! Search users skewing younger than Google.com users - and also found that Google users tend to be bigger spenders online. The age gap has closed slightly so that Yahoo! Search users still do tend to skew younger than Google but by a smaller margin than in February.

According to the latest E SOURCE market research study, 51% of Internet users in the U.S. and Canada now pay at least one monthly bill online. That represents a substantial increase over the results of the company's 2004 research. At that time, only 33% of Internet users were making online payments. In 2005, the Pew Internet & American Life Project reported a relatively small increase -- around 38% of Internet users were paying a monthly bill online. According to Andrew Heath, director of Customer Satisfaction Services at E SOURCE and one of the new study's authors, "our current finding is important because it indicates a major shift in customer behavior over the past four years." He added that the new research also found that "16% of the people who have used a utility's interactive voice reponse (IVR) system have used it to make a monthl

Mozilla reaches for 20% market share with Firefox 3 The spread of Firefox has varied largely based upon country, with figures as high as 40% in some European countries but lower than 10% in others. However, the overall trend of Firefox gaining market share worldwide continues, and it seems now they are reaching a point where they will have 20% of the world's Internet-connected desktops using Firefox as their browser. Some may make the choice for technical reasons, some might be jumping on a bandwagon and some might be given it by a friend – no matter how or why they are using it, Mozilla is very pleased with their progress.
