An anonymous reader brings news that Verizon Wireless has announced plans to use a Linux-based software platform for phones on its network. Verizon is the first US mobile carrier to join the Linux Mobile Foundation, the goal of which is to "collaboratively develop a comprehensive Linux-based mobile software stack that can be modified easily and used at no cost on a wide range of hardware devices." Many had expected Verizon to go with Android, but according to the Register, Verizon feels Android "isn't as open as it would prefer." Continuing: "Yes, Google bills Android as open. And, yes, it's backed by the Open Handset Alliance, another industry consortium calling for the open development of mobile apps. But [Verizon spokesman Jeffrey] Nelson argues that at this point, Google is calling the shots.

Google urged U.S. regulators to prevent Verizon Wireless from excluding the carrier's mobile phones from open-access rules that apply to airwaves Verizon bought for $4.7 billion in a government auction. The Federal Communications Commission shouldn't grant Verizon the nationwide set of licenses, known as the C-block, unless the company guarantees that its devices will let subscribers use the network to download any legal program, Google said in a May 2 petition. The FCC's C-block rules, backed by Google and consumer advocates, require Verizon to let any device or program run on the airwaves, breaking a wireless-carrier tradition of limiting the products they support. Verizon Wireless has said it will exceed the FCC's expectations in building a network that is open to any device or application.

Nokia to manufacture Linux-based phones?

According to the Finnish business newspaper Kauppalehti, Nokia's Chief Financial Officer said Nokia is considering manufacturing Linux-based mobile phones. The article quotes Rick Simonson, Nokia's Chief Financial Officer, as saying "we are definitely moving in the direction (of Linux-based phones)" at a seminar in Boston run by JP Morgan Chase. There was no further detail though, and apparently Simonson refused to be drawn on which kind of Linux would be used. Nokia already makes the Linux-based N800 and N810 internet tablets, which use Nokia's own version of Linux called Maemo, but current tablets have no telephony ability.

Rumors Of A Nokia Linux Cellphone Are A Bit Of A Leap

A couple of sites have picked up on a Reuters story titled “Nokia (NYSE: NOK) eyes wider usage of Linux in cellphones�—I reckon this is a sub-editing mistake, since the article only loosely links Nokia mobile phones with the Linux operating system. There’s quotes from two Nokia people, but both appear to be about Nokia’s Linux-based Internet Tablet range rather than an expansion into mobile phones. A Nokia spokesperson told MocoNews: “At this point, Linux is only being used on the tablet (non-cellular) products, and Nokia has not announced any cellular products with the Linux-based platforms...Nokia also doesn’t comment on products it hasn’t announced yet.� That doesn’t mean Nokia will never have a Linux-based handset, but it’s likely to only produce them when there’s a demand rather than champion the OS.

In addition, they are encouraging their AIB partners to showcase Tux on the product packaging as a sign of Linux support. Last but certainly not least, AMD is committed from top-to-bottom product support on Linux and they will be introducing high-end features in their Linux driver such as MultiGPU CrossFire technology.
