Sun Microsystems' Next Linux Move (Seeking Alpha)

When Sun Microsystems (JAVA) acquired MySQL for $1 billion, it instantly gave Sun credibility in the open source market. But Sun isn't stopping there. In recent weeks, Sun has quietly increased its bets on the fastest growing version of Linux in the market. And it isn't from Red Hat or Novell. Rather, Sun is preparing to certify more of its servers for Canonical's Ubuntu Linux. The effort includes Sun's latest small and midsize business servers. In an interview with Reuters on April 2, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth reinforced the growing relations between Sun and Ubuntu.

Sun Outlines its Open Source Strategy and MySQL Integration

Barton George: Open source is inevitable, and we are choosing to lead. Open source is a part of Sun's heritage and the idea of sharing. Right from its work on the NFS [Network File System] file server, Sun has made open standards a part of its strategy going back to the GNOME project. Now open source has moved from a side effort to become Sun's main software strategy, the way we develop and distribute our software. And one way is to contribute to existing projects..."

Dionysius, God of Wine and Leaf brings news that Sun Microsystems will be removing the last restrictions on Java to make it completely open source. Sun wants Java to be easily available for use in Linux distributions. We've discussed the steps Sun has taken to open-source Java over the past couple years. From Yahoo! News: "'We've been engaging with the open-source community for Java to finish off the OpenJDK project, and the specific thing that we've been working on with them is clearing the last bits that we didn't have the rights,' to distribute, Sands said. 'Over the past year, we have pretty much removed most of those encumbrances.' Work still needs to be done to offer the Java sound engine and SNMP code via open source; that effort is expected to be completed this year.
