Embedded Systems Conference Booth #1929 and #2118, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:JAVA) and Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND) today announced that Wind River will port its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) and Workbench development suite to Sun's UltraSPARC T2 chip multithreading (CMT) processor. Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition, will be the first carrier grade Linux for Sun's CMT processors. With this announcement, Sun and Wind River will be providing the networking industry with a fully integrated, optimized and tested solution of the industry's leading multicore processing hardware and CGL, enabling companies to quickly develop and deploy nextgeneration enabled networking applications. Sun's Netra Carrier Grade rack servers and ATCA blades will be the first CMT systems to run Wind River Carrier Grade Linux.

When Sun Microsystems (JAVA) acquired MySQL for $1 billion, it instantly gave Sun credibility in the open source market. But Sun isn't stopping there. In recent weeks, Sun has quietly increased its bets on the fastest growing version of Linux in the market. And it isn't from Red Hat or Novell. Rather, Sun is preparing to certify more of its servers for Canonical's Ubuntu Linux. The effort includes Sun's latest small and midsize business servers. What do you do at Sun? I see the OpenSolaris project seems to fall onto your plate. Initially, I was working on OpenSolaris and started Project Indiana, which culminated this week [with] the first version of the OpenSolaris binary distribution. These days, I am running the developer and community marketing organization, so I am responsible for marketing Sun's developer tools, the developer programs like Sun Developer Network and Tech Days Events, our open-source projects and communities. [Also, I do marketing for] StarOffice, OpenOffice, Network.com. So basically anything that relates to the developer community in some way, I run the marketing piece of that.

Here’s one for Linux-loving conspiracy theorists: Wal-Mart will stop selling PCs running the Linux operating system in its stores. The retailer started selling Linux PCs last fall, prompting this blog to write that if the PCs proved popular with consumers, businesses might start running the operating system on the PCs that workers use. (While businesses regularly run Linux on servers, the back-office computers that process data, hardly any run Linux on PCs.) Linux.com's Joe Barr has an interesting commentary about the recent Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit and the astounding lack of attention for desktop Linux. Now, a great deal of the monetary support driving Linux these days comes from companies with a vested interest in "big iron" but hopefully this won't completely eclipse the rest of the community. "Before I learned that the press was not welcome in any of the working-meetings at the summit on days 2 and 3, I saw and heard rumblings of discontent from more than one ordinary Linux desktop user. One example: a top-ten list of inhibitors to Linux adoption, created by a committee of foundation members, contained nothing at all relating to desktop usage. Nothing. Everything on the list was about back-room usage.

As soon as former MySQL CEO Marten Mickos, now a Sun Microsystems senior VP for databases, took the stage, he was asked what was Sun's commitment to the L in LAMP?... the integrated open source stack that includes Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. In an interview with Arshan Poursohi, staff researcher at the Sun SPOT lab, Mary Grush of Campus Technology explores some of the implications of this further opening of Sun technology. 2muchcoffeeman writes "Adobe announced Monday that it is joining the Linux Foundation and alpha-released a Linux version of its new Adobe Internet Runtime environment, which allows Internet-enable applications to run on Windows and Mac OS desktops, for Linux. According to Adobe, the alpha version lacks some key features that will be available in the final product and only runs with Sun Java, not GNU Java. Adobe also released an alpha of Flex Builder for Linux Monday."

sean_nestor writes to mention that Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz took a bit of time recently to comment on last week's announcement that Sun Microsystems would be partnering closely with the NSA for security research surrounding OpenSolaris. Rather than the typical loads of legalese and confidentiality agreements Sun and the NSA are claiming that this move is more about the NSA joining the OpenSolaris community than anything else. I guess only time will tell.
