Open source largest software industry Alfresco CEO: related news

Open Source Software Shows Its Muscle (Law.com)

Open source software had its origins in the free software movement. By now, most open source users understand that free refers to freedom, not to price. The new lesson is that the freedom belongs to the software, not to users. You are not free to do whatever you want with the open source software and may find yourself in a legal fight if what you do restricts the freedom of the software. Many of the things that for-profit companies strive for end up limiting some software's freedom. Any activity that leverages software for business advantage is likely to restrict the software's freedom, and the growing use of open source software by for-profit companies has been a growing irritant for free software advocates.

Open Source Largest Software Industry: Alfresco CEO

Computerworld Australia — How can something given away for free end up being the world's largest industry of its type? Well, according to open source content management vendor Alfresco CEO John Powell the value of open source is not what it generates, but what it saves, and that's worth billions.

Is Open Source Good for the Java Developer?

Commercial open source software has arrived. There have been commercial sponsors of open source projects for a long time, but the recent spate of high-price (for open source, at least) acquisitions of companies with open source products at the core of their business has made a splash in the technology industry. In addition, Sun’s convulsions into the open source world have left the Java landscape decisively in open source territory.

Microsoft's non-open source attempt at open source

Microsoft has evolved in its stance toward open source, but its current hiccup with the Sandcastle project calls into question just how well it understands the obligations open source imposes. Microsoft created its CodePlex site to host open-source software, and has been careful to abide by open-source rules, submitting its licenses to the Open Source Initiative for approval.

Microsoft - Open Source Community Is Watching

Microsoft's been getting some flack for posting a project called Sandcastle on their Codeplex open source site but not including the source code for the project. Ops, that is a rather "open" definition of open source software. Either it was just one of those goof ups that happen in big companies or someone on the Sandcastle team really don't know that open source licensed software is supposed to include source code. I'd guess it was a goof up. Whatever the reason, Microsoft's learned a hard lesson very quickly; the open source community does a good job of policing policy violations, and they are just waiting for Microsoft to make a mistake.

Is Mule Really Open Source?

"Most Open Source Projects (Not the namesake open source projects) are released under an OSI approved license. The open source definition of OSI states that 'Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria'. It goes on to describe 10 items under this. Item #6 states that 'The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specific field of endeavor. For example, it may not restrict the program from being used in a business, or from being used for genetic research.'

DiBona on Googles Open Source Philosophy

Google often gets a bad rap when it comes to “open source citizenship” because many don’t think the company gives back as much open source code as it uses. And its lack of support for the Affero General Public License (AGPL) v3 doesn’t help matters. But as News.com writer Stephen Shankland found, Google’s open source program manager, Chris DiBona, isn’t all that worried about what open source businesses or open source evangelists think about Google. His philosophy is to focus on the open source developers:

Open source software security improving

You cannot say something’s good or bad unless you benchmark or compare it against something else. According to theOpen Source Security Report 2008 Linus’s Law, “given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow”, a mentality which when combined with static code analysis of the most popular and widely used open source projects such as Firefox, Linux and PHP and benchmark it against 250 other open source projects, can truly make an impact. Is open source software security improving? Coverity’s recently released Open Source Report 2008, indicates it is.

Alfresco-Adobe Pact Continues To Strengthen Open Source

rsmiller510 writes "Last week Adobe surprised a few people with the announcement that it was including Alfresco content management services as part of its LiveCycle Enterprise Suite Update 1 package. The surprise was two-fold, that Adobe felt it was necessary to add content management services at all, and that it chose open source vendor Alfresco as its content management partner. I spoke to Alfresco CEO John Powell to get his perspective on the pact and how it can help push open source into the enterprise mainstream. Powell is understandably excited by this arrangement, and one of the main reasons, he says, is because the Adobe partnership gives his company credibility with companies that might otherwise not even sniff at an open source vendor.

Microsoft 'Shared Source' Attempts to Hijack FOSS

aacc1313 writes "An article that details how Open Source is being hijacked by Microsoft and the sort via 'Shared Source' licenses and how Open Source licenses have become so much more confusing. From the article, "The confusion stems from the fact that Microsoft's 'shared source' program includes three proprietary licenses as well, whose names are similar in some ways to the open-source licenses. Thus, while the Microsoft Reciprocal License has been approved by OSI, the Microsoft Limited Reciprocal License (Ms-LRL) is not, because it allows users to modify and redistribute the software only on the Windows platform" and "The 'shared source' program was and is Microsoft's way of fighting the open source world, allowing customers to inspect Microsoft source code without giving those customers the right to modify or redistribute the code.

Alfresco founder says open source makes software better

In 2005, Alfresco was the first open source software company in the UK to capture venture funding, for its collection of enterprise document management applications. John Powell, formerly the COO of Business Objects, and John Newton, founder of Documentum, got together to launch Alfresco because they wanted to create a business that would have "global reach," according to Powell. Right from the start, Powell and Newton knew that the best way to do that was to create and market an open source product.

CRM Open Source's Kineo To Offer Services, Support

Back in 2005, an ATOS survey found that 60 percent of businesses were planning to use some form of open source software in their business. Since that survey, open source software products have been widely adopted. Open source Web site development tools such as Joomla are common, and BT recently announced that it will be offering all of its clients the open source CRM system SugarCRM (News - Alert) rather than Siebel.
