Mozilla Pitches Firefox 3.1 Alpha For July Release

An anonymous reader writes "Just a week after Mozilla shipped Firefox 3.0, the open-source developer has proposed ship dates for the next version that, if approved, would produce an alpha release next month and a final no later than early 2009. According to a draft schedule discussed at a recent meeting, Mozilla wants to have the first Firefox 3.1 developer preview ready by July, then move to a beta by August. The schedule slates final code delivery in the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2009. A month ago, when Mozilla first started discussing Firefox 3.1 internally, Mike Schroepfer, the company's vice president of engineering, said the upgrade's target ship date was the end of 2008. If Mozilla holds to that plan, Firefox 3.

Mozilla Wants to Set World Record with Firefox 3.0

It may sound crazy, but Mozilla wants to set a world record with the upcoming release of Firefox 3.0. Mozilla is asking users to join in a pledge campaign promising to download the latest version of its Firefox browser on release day in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the most number of software downloads in 24 hours. While the official release date has not been announced, you can follow the link above to the pledge site for more information. Mozilla expects the release to happen in June. According to the site, no record of this nature has ever been attempted so their goal is to beat the 1.6 million downloads recorded by Firefox 2 on its release day and hopefully hit 5 million downloads. Mozilla is asking everyone to play nice and not download multiple copies and is taking pains to not count incomplete or duplicate downl

Firefox Appears Ready to Crack 20% Share Next Month

CWmike writes "Mozilla's Firefox browser is on pace to hit the 20% market-share mark next month. Mozilla marketing VP Vince Vizzaccaro didn't pin all of Firefox's increase on a change last month to its update dialog, he did note the new approach. "Mozilla has implemented a change in Firefox 3.0 [Release Candidate 1] where the installation now has a checkbox that defaults to making Firefox your default browser," he explained. He refused to ding Mozilla for the practice. 'The option is clearly displayed and labeled, unlike Safari, which misleadingly labeled the Safari install as an "update" [but has] since correctly changed to an 'install.' However, this practice is a break from the traditional practice browsers employed of defaulting this option to off.

Mozilla releases Firefox 3.0rc1 preview for testing

Mozilla has released a preview release of Firefox 3 Release Candidate, the next generation Firefox browser. Designed for "testing purposes only," the company emphasizes that preview releases are published to collect feedback from Web developers and our testing community before advancing to the next stage in the release process. Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which offers improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Version 3 offers one-click site info, malware protection, a new Web Forgery Protection page, new SSL error pages, anti-virus integration, easier password management, simplified add-on installation, a new Download Manager, resumable downloading, and a new Firefox theme for Mac OS X along with Growl for notifications.

Mozilla reaches for 20% market share with Firefox 3

Mozilla reaches for 20% market share with Firefox 3 The spread of Firefox has varied largely based upon country, with figures as high as 40% in some European countries but lower than 10% in others. However, the overall trend of Firefox gaining market share worldwide continues, and it seems now they are reaching a point where they will have 20% of the world's Internet-connected desktops using Firefox as their browser. Some may make the choice for technical reasons, some might be jumping on a bandwagon and some might be given it by a friend – no matter how or why they are using it, Mozilla is very pleased with their progress.

Mozilla Dev Team On Firefox's Success

Titus Germanicus writes "If you're thinking about open sourcing a project in the near future, Mozilla might be the perfect blueprint to follow. At last week's Mesh 2008 conference in Canada, Mike Shaver, chief technology evangelist and founding member at Mozilla, and John Resig, a JavaScript evangelist at Mozilla — two of the key figures behind the success of Mozilla's Firefox Web browser — listed inclusivity and transparency as two of the top cornerstones of any community-built project. Shaver said in this interview that because the Web is intended for everybody, the level same openness should be shared with Firefox's open source contributors."

Firefox 3 - you going to get it?

There is a goal to get a world record for downloads of Firefox 3. Spread Firefox is a site dedicated to, well, spreading Firefox. If you're not sure you want Firefox 3, check out the Firefox 3 preview on the About.com Browsers site. I'm going to get Firefox 3 - if only for Prism. Mozilla Firefox 3 Features Screencast

An anonymous reader points to a mention at MozillaZine of "a screencast by Mozilla developer Mike Beltzner, demonstrating some of the new features in Mozilla Firefox 3, which is due out very soon. Weighing in at under four minutes, the screencast gives a concise overview of why you should be excited about Firefox 3. Due to its visual nature, the screencast shows Firefox's features far more clearly than the many written previews that have been published. A picture really is worth a thousand words."
