While I was trawling through Net Applications' operating system share trend data for the past 24 months, something struck me.

Yahoo, sought by Microsoft, gets more search traffic

Yahoo, the Internet company fighting off advances from Microsoft, won a bigger share of U.S. Internet search queries last month, shrinking the gap with market leader Google. Yahoo had a 20.9 percent share in June, up from 20.6 percent in the previous month, according to Reston,Va.-based researcher ComScore. Mountain View-based Google's share dropped to 61.5 percent from 61.8 percent, while Microsoft took third place with 9.2 percent, compared with 8.5 percent in May. Overall, Americans conducted 11.5 billion searches on the Internet in June, a 7 percent increase from May, ComScore said. Both Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft and Google released results Thursday that trailed analysts' estimates. Yahoo plans to report earnings Tuesday.

In addition, they are encouraging their AIB partners to showcase Tux on the product packaging as a sign of Linux support. There's no dearth of Linux distributions for desktop users or even for running high availability servers. But if you are a do-it-yourself computer user, your choice of Linux distros is fairly limited. You can build Linux from scratch with Linux from Scratch or compile your own set of packages with Gentoo. But if you want a distro that teaches you the basics of Linux as you set it up; is well documented, lightweight, and zippy; and has a dependency-resolving packaging system, you need Arch Linux.

Why Is Adobe Flash On Linux Still Broken?

One in every three or four YouTube videos crashes the browser. I remember sometime back reading that Adobe has a very small development team (possibly only one) working on the Linux port of Flash. It has occurred to me that Flash on Linux is the one major entry barrier controlling acceptance of Linux as a viable desktop operating system. No matter how stably, smoothly, efficiently, and correctly Linux runs on a machine, the public will continue to view it as second-rate if Flash keeps crashing. This is the worst example of being tied down and bound by a crappy 3rd-party product over which no Linux distribution has any control.

Microsoft Search Queries Jump 15%.

In June, Google Sites retained its lead in the U.S. core search market capturing 61.5 percent of the searches conducted, down slightly from 61.8 percent in May. Google was followed by Yahoo! Sites (20.9 percent, up from 20.6 percent in May), Microsoft Sites (9.2 percent, up from 8.5 percent in May), Ask Network (4.3 percent), and AOL LLC (4.1 percent).
