Open Source Cards Project Meets Objections

An attempt to create an open-source set of public safety protocol cards has run into a legal setback after a commercial company issued an Internet cease-and-desist order that claimed copyright infringement. The cards were developed by the Open ISES Project, which has also developed an open-source CAD software application, and posted on-line just last March. However, last week the group says it received a letter from attorneys representing Medical Priority Consultants, who apparently stated that the open source cards infringed on the company's copyrights. In response, the Project took down the cards, and issued a statement explaining their actions. "We are hoping that we can work out an agreement with them. However, until such time, we had to take the site and associated files down," said Robert Austin, who manages the Project.

The open source definition of OSI states that 'Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria'. It goes on to describe 10 items under this. Item #6 states that 'The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specific field of endeavor. For example, it may not restrict the program from being used in a business, or from being used for genetic research.'

Open-Source Software: Evolving Toward Broader Acceptance

Open source is assessed for more than half of businesses software acquisitions, according to Saugatuck Technology, a research and consulting firm. A CIO.com survey conducted in April showed that 53 percent of respondents were already using open-source applications in their enterprises and that 44 percent considered open-source applications equally during acquisition processes with proprietary applications. While this may surprise some, most businesses no longer carry the negative perceptions once associated with open-source solutions. The software is in use in some of the world's largest corporations and governments, in some of the most intensive application environments. The other 10 were found to have poor results, with those being Derby, Geronimo, Hibernate, Hipergate, JBoss, Jonas, OFBiz, OpenCMS, Resin and Struts. In the first such project in India, the intelligent traffic monitoring software will monitor and send the data to a network operating centre (NOC) at Lalbazar, red-brick headquarters of Kolkata Police, where a core team will act in real time to control the flow. The Rs 25-crore project, using Red Hat Linux operating system, will incorporate a digital map with detailed GIS or geographical information system of the city and even the emergency number 100, giving the police an exact fix on the caller’s location and identity.

Microsoft Rebuilds Open Source Sandcastle

"Microsoft is apparently serious about its efforts to adhere to the letter of the Open Source Definition and is now set to relaunch its Sandcastle effort as a result. Nearly a month ago Microsoft pulled the Sandcastle project from its CodePlex site because it was listed as being open source (under the OSI approved Ms-PL) when in fact it wasn't because it didn't adhere to the licensing terms of open source. Sandcastle which is a documentation compiler for managed class libraries did not have source code open and available for download.
