Firefox updated to version 3 0 3: related news

Firefox 3.0.4 and Firefox 2.0.0.18 Drop Next Week

Mozilla is gearing up to make available the next releases of Firefox 3.0 and Firefox 2.0. At the end of September 2008, Firefox 2.0.0.17 and Firefox 3.0.2 stability and security updates were made available for download. By the end of that month, Mozilla was also releasing Firefox 3.0.3, an update designed to resolve a regression issue introduced by version 3.0.2. The coming week, users will be able to update to Firefox 3.0.4 and Firefox 2.0.0.18, according to Mozilla's current plans.

End of Security Updates for Firefox 2.0

Mozilla Corporation’s policy is to support a browser for six months after it has been replaced by a new version. Firefox 3.0 has been out for some time now, and version 2.0 has continually been updated with numerous security fixes; the last of which had patched fourteen vulnerabilities. But because of the policy that the corporation holds, Mozilla only plans to supply two more security updates to the aging browser. Mike Beltzner, the director of Firefox, stated that the plan for the end of development for version 2.0 is set for the latter part of December. He also noted that a large number of Firefox 2.0 users have already upgraded their browser to version 3.0. Firefox 2.0.0.19 will be the last release of the open source browser at the end of its life span.

Firefox 3.0.3 Will Fix Firefox 3.0.2

Having just offered the Firefox 3.0.2 stability and security update for version 3.0.1, Mozilla is hard at work to produce yet another refresh. Firefox 3.0.2 was released simultaneously with Firefox 2.0.0.17, but while the integration of the latter went as smooth as possible, the latest update for v3.0 brought a regression issue. Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's User Experience Lead indicated that Mozilla identified the problem and is hammering away at another 3.0 update.

While making headway in the development of the first Beta build of Firefox 3.1 codename Shiretoko, Mozilla is also tending to the 2.0 and 3.0 versions of its open source browser. In this context, the latest releases of Firefox 3.0

Do Software Versions Really Matter?

An anonymous reader writes "I work for a rather large software company and I am currently working on a completely new product. So new in fact, that the official name has not even been decided. I had assumed that the version number for this product would be 1.0 (at most). However recently I learned that the Product Managers want to release this NEW product with a version number somewhere between 5.0 and 8.0 because 'there is a stigma about buying 1.0 products. People assume it's no good.' This latest Dilbert-esque comedy routine nearly sent me over the edge. So to gauge my sanity against that of the upper Product Management, I ask the community: Do version numbers play a role in software decisions, or have product version numbers lost all credibility and meaning? Would the community feel comfortable buying version '6.

Firefox 3 Soldiers On As Firefox 2 Prepares Its Exit

In October, Mozilla witnessed a surge in Firefox 3's market share as it continued its plan to decommission Firefox 2 -- and the Gecko engine that powered it -- before the end of December. For two weeks in October, Firefox 3 claimed 20% market share, something that web metrics company Net Applications predicted might happen within a month of the new version's June release. Stalled growth, and Chrome's appearance caused some backslide, but Firefox 3's pulse is getting stronger.

Gong Li, CEO of Mozilla Online Ltd., the Chinese subsidiary of Firefox developer Mozilla Corp., said that Firefox accounts for around 2 percent to 3 percent of China's Web browser market by user base. He aims to double this figure, hopefully by the end of next year. Mozilla to end Firefox 2.x support in mid-December

Mozilla announced today they are continuing their EOL (end of life) policy with their products by ending support for Firefox version 2 even though version 3 itself has its own problems. The EOL policy is a system Mozilla set up to allow the developers to end their work on a previous version so they can work on the future versions. The EOL for the previous product kicks in after 6 months of release of a new product. If you are using version 2 of Firefox you may not be able to get any security updates or patches for flaws that could occur from now on.
