The Mozilla Foundation has set a world record and achieved new heights in its battle for browser market share. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Mozilla's Firefox 3.0 Web browser set a record for the most downloads in a day. It was the first time a browser-maker attempted to set a record.

Firefox Market Share Hits 19%

Mozilla Corp. released its updated browser, Firefox 3.0, last month with a push to set a new world record for most number of downloads of a new release in a 24 hour period. Now results show that Firefox posted a 0.6% market share increase in June to 19% of the overall browser market. Safari and Opera also eked out small gains in June as well. These increases come at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which fell to 73%. The bulk of Firefox's increase came following the June 17 release of Firefox 3.0. All three alternative browsers hit all time highs with IE hitting a corresponding record low. If these trends continue, Firefox is expected to break 20% market share this month.

The study also revealed that the majority of Safari users (65.3) percent were likely to use the latest version of the browser between December 2007 and June 2008, after Safari version 3 became available. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Internet Explorer users ranked last in terms of safe browsing.

Yahoo, sought by Microsoft, gets more search traffic

Yahoo, the Internet company fighting off advances from Microsoft, won a bigger share of U.S. Internet search queries last month, shrinking the gap with market leader Google. Yahoo had a 20.9 percent share in June, up from 20.6 percent in the previous month, according to Reston,Va.-based researcher ComScore. Mountain View-based Google's share dropped to 61.5 percent from 61.8 percent, while Microsoft took third place with 9.2 percent, compared with 8.5 percent in May. Overall, Americans conducted 11.5 billion searches on the Internet in June, a 7 percent increase from May, ComScore said. Both Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft and Google released results Thursday that trailed analysts' estimates. Yahoo plans to report earnings Tuesday.

In June, Google Sites retained its lead in the U.S. core search market capturing 61.5 percent of the searches conducted, down slightly from 61.8 percent in May. Google was followed by Yahoo! Sites (20.9 percent, up from 20.6 percent in May), Microsoft Sites (9.2 percent, up from 8.5 percent in May), Ask Network (4.3 percent), and AOL LLC (4.1 percent).

Hitwise provides more proof of Google's search dominance

Researchers at Hitwise released new data Monday indicating that Google in July topped a 70 percent share of U.S. Web searches (70.77 percent to be exact). Firefox 3.1 Alpha Launched

Code named "Shiretoko", Firefox 3.1 has been launched in an Alpha state following a short delay due to a bug in the OSX-compatible version. Among the features we can expect to see in 3.1 are improved address bar functionality and changes to the tab switching interface, including adding thumbnails of currently open tabs. Also, Firefox 3.1 will be the first Mozilla browser to feature Netscape's Gecko 1.9.1 engine, which reads and renders Internet content to the browser, and also renders the browser's UI. The Firefox 3.1 Alpha is available for download here, and has a projected final release date sometime in late 2008 or early 2009.
