Comparing Firefox 3 With Opera 9.5 On Linux

Joe Barr writes "Mayank Sharma has two recent stories on Linux.com; one evaluating the performance of Firefox 3, and the second comparing it to Opera 9.5. Which is better? For most people, it's probably more a matter of familiarity or personal preference, but these stories provide hard performance data to consider as well. Sharma notes, 'In terms of rendering JavaScript, Firefox 3 had the edge over Opera 9.5 in the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark, which has an error range between +/-0.8% to +/-11.3% depending on the type of test. In the JavScript Engine speed test, Opera 9.5 scores over its peers when it comes to error handling, DOM, and AJAX.'" Slashdot shares a corporate overlord with Linux.com.

Mozilla Patch Plugs a Safari Hole

Mozilla Corp. has patched a pair of critical vulnerabilities in Firefox, taking the unusual step of updating the older version 2.0 on Tuesday but delaying the fixes for the newer version 3.0 until Wednesday. Both updates, labeled Firefox 2.0.0.16 and Firefox 3.0.1, plug two holes rated "critical" by Mozilla, which uses a four-step threat ranking system. Firefox 2.0.0.16 was posted to Mozilla's servers Tuesday afternoon.

Firefox Market Share Hits 19%

Mozilla Corp. released its updated browser, Firefox 3.0, last month with a push to set a new world record for most number of downloads of a new release in a 24 hour period. Now results show that Firefox posted a 0.6% market share increase in June to 19% of the overall browser market. Safari and Opera also eked out small gains in June as well. These increases come at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which fell to 73%. The bulk of Firefox's increase came following the June 17 release of Firefox 3.0. All three alternative browsers hit all time highs with IE hitting a corresponding record low. If these trends continue, Firefox is expected to break 20% market share this month.

The Hasselblad H3DII-50 - the 50 stands for 50 megapixel

July 15, 2008 The latest addition to professional camera specialist Hasselblad’s H-Series is the H3DII-50, and yes, the 50 in the camera’s model number does refer to 50 megapixels thanks to Kodak’s 50 megapixel 36×48mm sensor. This sensor is twice the physical size of the largest 35mm DSLR sensors with Kodak stating that, "at 50 [megapixels] the sensor captures digital images with unprecedented resolution and detail. For instance, with a 50 megapixel camera, in an aerial photo of a field 1-½ miles across, you could detect an object about the size of a small notebook computer (1 foot by 1 foot)." In addition to the increased resolution, the new sensor also provides the foundation for the development of advanced lens performance and optical corrections.

Firefox 3.0 final: What's new

Firefox 3.0: Cut the Superlatives, Please

IconI've seen superlative after superlative concerning the release of Firefox 3.0, and in all honesty, it is making my stomach ache. Yes, Firefox 3.0 is a great release. It has a slicker interface (the UI on Vista looks quite pretty) and the use of native widgets in Linux is a very, very welcome addition. On top of that, it actually delivers what I was craving for the most from my favourite Windows web browser: much improved performance. But does Firefox 3.0 change the web, or alter the way we use the intertubes?

Firefox v. Safari Round 3: JavaScript crown goes to Safari

You may remember a couple months ago there was some contention whether Safari or Firefox had the fastest JavaScript performance. Apple had claimed Safari 3 was the fastest when compared to Firefox 2, though improvements in Firefox 3 betas had narrowed or eliminated that gap. Zimbra, a company that makes a web-based collaboration suite, has now performed some new benchmarks that show Safari on top. Zimra's results, based on testing using its own tools, shows Safari 3.1 with a clear lead over Firefox 3.0.

Forget Firefox - I'm going back to Opera

With the release of Firefox 3, I mounted a private celebration: I went back to using Opera 9.5 as my main browser. This wasn't just perversity. Firefox without its add-ons is clearly inferior to Opera. Firefox with enough add-ons to make it really useful is very much slower. And Opera has one advantage over all the competition which is enough to outweigh all its other faults to me.

Firefox 3 - you going to get it?

There is a goal to get a world record for downloads of Firefox 3. Spread Firefox is a site dedicated to, well, spreading Firefox. If you're not sure you want Firefox 3, check out the Firefox 3 preview on the About.com Browsers site. I'm going to get Firefox 3 - if only for Prism. My free download of Firefox 3 is done and ready to install. Yay!

Brendan Eich Discusses the Future of JavaScript

snydeq writes "JavaScript creator Brendan Eich talks at length about the future of JavaScript, ARAX, disputes with Microsoft, and the Screaming Monkey scripting engine for IE in an interview with InfoWorld's Paul Krill. JavaScript 2, which Mozilla's Eich expects to be available in some form by the end of the year, will 'address programming in the large.' To do that, Eich hopes to improve the integrity of the language without sacrificing flexibility and making JavaScript 'painfully static in a fixed way like Java does.' Eich does not expect Firefox support for JavaScript 2 until at least Version 3.1 of the browser. As for Internet Explorer, Eich explains how Screaming Monkey will help bring JavaScript 2 to IE should Microsoft drag its heels on providing meaningful support.

Firefox 2.0.0.16 Today; 3.0.1 Tomorrow?

"Personally I think that the decision to patch 2.x one day and 3.x the next is a very risky security decision - regardless of the fact that Mozilla thinks there is less risk to Firefox 3. The reality is that users don't patch as quickly as they should (though they do update Firefox faster than other browsers) and having a known vulnerability out there waiting to patch isn't my idea of mitigating risk properly."

Houston Grand Opera's Anthony Freud Elected Chairman Of Opera America
