AMD Thunderbird 700MHz: related news

AMD "Thunderbird" 700MHz

Since the original AMD Athlon was released last year I’ve always wanted one... PC INDEX Australia must have heard me calling because they have supplied us with a AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 700MHz SLOT A CPU, FIC SD11 motherboard, Free Speed Pro GFD and a big whooping air cooler for some reviewage here @ TT. Our test unit FIC SD11 motherboard didn’t at all justify the power and performance of the AMD Athlon "Thunderbird". This is simply due to the FIC SD11 having a lowly AMD 751 "Irongate" chipset with only AGP 1x support with GeForce cards (AGP 2x unstable). FIC isn’t to blame for this (well not directly anyway) it’s the Northbridge chipset which is causing all the problems. It seems also that this Irongate chipset doesn’t support Sound Blaster Vibra ISA cards, since we’re not reviewing the FIC SD11 motherboard we’ll carry on with the AMD A

AMD Makes An Evolutionary Leap In Linux Support

"Less than a year ago we shared with you the revolutionary steps AMD was taking to deliver significant improvements to their once infamous proprietary Linux display driver and at the same time the work they were doing to foster the growth of an open-source driver for their latest graphics card families. These steps have certainly paid off for both AMD and the Linux community at large. AMD's proprietary driver is now on par with NVIDIA's Linux driver and there are two open-source ATI drivers picking up new features and improvements on an almost daily basis. AMD also continues to publish new programming guides and register information on a routine basis for their latest and greatest hardware. This has been truly phenomenal to see, but AMD has now evolved their Linux support by taking it a large step further.

AMD posts a loss of $1.19 Billion for Q2

AMD posted a loss of $1.19 billion for Q2 on revenue of $1.349 billion. That figure is 7% below Q1'08 and 3% higher than their performance from a year ago. That loss includes an $880 million goodwill writedown as a result of their ATI acquisition. AMD announced that they divested themselves of their consumer electronics business (formerly ATI's DTV/handheld division), although they didn't state if that is the result of a pending sale of the unit. Excluding the goodwill charge, AMD's Q2 loss was $269 million, which is much better than Q2'07 when AMD lost $531 million.

AMD to take $758 million charge for Q2

Today AMD announced it will take $948 million in charges for Q2, the news has sent AMD's stock below $5. The bulk of the charges ($880 million) came from the continuing decline in goodwill value of their ATI acquisition, more specifically ATI's DTV/handheld unit. If you recall last year AMD took a $1.6 billion dollar hit because of this. An additional $32 million charge is going towards severance packages for employees who were laid off earlier this year, while the final $36 million is associated with a decline in value of securities as well as AMD's Spansion stock.

AMD just launched a new initiative called AMD GAME! that attempts to bring some of these benefits to PC games as well. AMD's New Card Supports Linux From the Get-Go

Michael writes "Back in September AMD had announced a new ATI Linux driver as well as opening up their GPU specifications, and today they have taken an additional step to better support the Linux OS. With the just-announced Radeon HD 4850 RV770 they have provided same-day Linux support, and the Linux driver is now shipping alongside the Windows driver on their product CDs. In addition, they are encouraging their AIB partners to showcase Tux on the product packaging as a sign of Linux support. Last but certainly not least, AMD is committed from top-to-bottom product support on Linux and they will be introducing high-end features in their Linux driver such as MultiGPU CrossFire technology. Phoronix has a run-down on AMD's evolutionary leap in Linux support along with information on the open-source support for the RV770 GPU.

AMD Releases Stream SDK For Linux

"Earlier this month we announced that AMD would soon be releasing their Stream SDK for Linux, and just before the start of the weekend this inaugural release had occurred. The Linux release of the AMD Stream SDK v1.1 Beta brings both CAL and Brook+ for those using ATI/AMD graphics hardware. This v1.1 Beta release is also in tune with the new beta release for Microsoft Windows XP.

AMD's Phenom 9950 Black Edition and 9350e CPUs

It has been nearly eight months since AMD originally launched their line of Phenom CPUs. In that time, they’ve resolved the infamous TLB erratum that plagued B2 stepping processors, released faster CPUs like the Phenom 9850 Black Edition, and less than three months ago they introduced the world’s first triple core processors. All these achievements – along with extremely aggressive pricing – have significantly improved Phenom’s position in the market in comparison to Intel’s Core 2 Quad, however, AMD still doesn’t have a higher-end offering to compete with the middle of Intel’s Core 2 lineup, much less the Extreme Edition CPUs at the very top, but as we all know, the bulk of sales occur in the value and midrange segments, and here AMD has a boatload of products ranging from single-core Athlon/Sempron all the way up to today’s latest quad-

AMD Catalyst 8.5 For Linux

"All of the Catalyst Linux driver releases this year have been... well, boring. There have been a few bug fixes in each release and new product support for the latest ATI/AMD GPUs, but no major features have been introduced in several months. However, during this time we've been telling you to get ready for an interesting summer and that "we have reason to believe AMD does have some Linux work under development that could make 2007 look boring compared to this year." It was in 2007 that AMD had introduced their brand-new driver with AIGLX support. Well, with the release today of Catalyst 8.5 the monthly Linux driver releases are becoming more interesting and we should have several exciting months ahead. What does today's Linux driver bring to the table? We'll give you the run-down in this article, but to get you started there is now Catal

AMD FireGL V8600: Linux vs. Windows

We've published a great deal of benchmarks looking at the Linux "fglrx" driver (now more commonly referred to as the Linux Catalyst driver) since these major changes were pushed into the limelight this past fall. In fact, since this past September we've published more than 80 display driver articles with many of them being AMD related, and that's in addition to nearly a dozen graphics card reviews. On the AMD side, all of our testing has been done with the consumer-grade Radeon GPUs and IGPs, but that has changed today. In this article, we are providing our first look at the AMD FireGL V8600 1GB under Linux. We'll share our thoughts on this high-end workstation graphics card and specifically looking at how the Windows and Linux performance compares.

Essential Thunderbird Add-Ons

"What's your normal routine when you log on in the morning? It's probably something along the lines of: pour cup of coffee, fire up Thunderbird, check your email, check your other email accounts that Thunderbird can't access, pour another cup of coffee. Well, here are a few Thunderbird extensions that may make your mornings go a little more smoothly.

AMD Delivers OpenGL Performance Increase for Linux Professional Graphics Customers

Radeon HD 4850 Works With Open-Source Driver Already

In our article this morning entitled AMD Makes An Evolutionary Leap In Linux Support, we briefly touched on the fact that AMD would be continuing in their open-source support for the Radeon HD 4000 generation of GPUs. AMD will release register information for the RV770 and the code to TCore and KGrids will help the community developers when it comes to 2D and 3D acceleration. Though, with not much work at all, this afternoon we have the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB running with the open-source xf86-video-ati driver! The Radeon HD 4850 will not currently work with the xf86-video-radeonhd driver as it doesn't rely upon the AtomBIOS in these areas, but in this article we have enclosed our patch and other information for using this open-source driver on AMD's latest hardware.
