eBay seller Doctor-Deals noticed a problem with eBay's third-party data analysis tool caused by the addition of eBay's new listing format. eBay, which recently stopped offering its own eBay Marketplace Research tool, refers users to a third-party service from Terapeak, an eBay Certified Provider. Terapeak's service allows sellers to determine average selling prices and best performing keywords and categories for their listings. But recent changes at eBay hamper users from getting timely data for fixed-price listings.

Michael Geist points us to the news that a Canadian court has told eBay Canada that it needs to cough up info on Canadian PowerSellers. The case involves attempts by the Canadian government to determine if eBay PowerSellers are underreporting earnings on their taxes. Canadian tax officials had asked eBay Canada to hand over data on various Canadian PowerSellers, but the company refused, noting that the info was actually held by eBay in the US, and thus the data was not subject to the Canada Revenue Agency's jurisdiction. The court disagreed, noting that eBay Canada had easy access to the data at a "click of the mouse." For the most part, this does make sense, though it does raise some questions about jurisdictions. Perhaps this is a special case, due to the close relationship between eBay and eBay Canada, but it still is a bit worrisome t

In line with this result, the online auctioneer also reported PayPal has been adopted by 35 of the 100 largest online merchants. Altogether, more than 1 million merchants now use PayPal, eBay chief executive John Donahoe said in an earnings call with analysts. But Donahoe and Bob Swan, eBay’s chief financial officer, assumed a somber tone during the call regarding the slumping economy and its impact on eBay businesses, including PayPal.

eBay has decided to block members from seeing winning bidder IDs in an effort to combat fraud. Sellers will still be able to view all bidder IDs on their own listings, and feedback pages will continue to show buyer and seller IDS. eBay's announcement stated, "This change was designed to protect bidders from fake Second Chance Offers and other malicious emails." eBay began its bidder-anonymizing program 2 years ago in the eBay Motors category for bids that exceeded $200 and expanded it over the past 2 years. eBay members have complained that the system makes it easier for disreputable sellers to shill bid on their own auctions to drive prices higher.

On the surface, the eBay business situation looks grim. In early October eBay laid off 1,600 employees, about 10 percent of its work force. Listings have grown at the slowest rate on the site since 1998, eBay Stores have dropped a reported 46 percent and recent reports note that Amazon fixed-price listings are gaining traction on eBay's market share. Does all this spell an impending sunset on eBay's virtual marketplace and the estimated 1.3 million sellers who make a full- or part-time living on the site?

Rumors are floating around that eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) is going to lay off about 10 percent of its 15,000 employees, attributable mainly to an analyst at Wedge Partners, a small Colorado investment-research firm. And while the company has refused to comment on it, it makes sense that eBay will do some rationalization of its business considering its declining profits and stagnant traffic. Despite that, the company is interested in making some more acquisitions in the online classifieds space, according to Jacob Aqraou, GM of eBay’s global classified business. He told WSJ that the company will take over a “fair” number of companies in the next six months or so. With the market being what it is, and the valuations coming down, the company is looking at sites that have leading positions in geographies and industry segments in which eBay does

(September 16, 2008) When eBay Inc. announced its all-electronic payments policy last month, the move triggered what an eBay executive calls a “mixed” response, at best, from the online marketplace’s sprawling seller community. But the policy changes go beyond banning checks and money orders on eBay. They include requirements that will force third-party payments vendors, as well as sellers with merchant accounts, to integrate their payment systems with eBay’s checkout process. And they have vaulted an 11-year-old processor in Orem, Utah, into prominence as the first provider other than eBay’s PayPal unit to provide integrated electronic processing.
