Los Angeles-based MySpace said Thursday morning that it has launched a new initiative to allow Yahoo, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter to pull public profile data into their websites. MySpace said its "Data Availability" effort will allow users to dynamically share their public profile information with other sites. MySpace will allow users to control what information they share with who, including basic profile information, photos, videos, and friends. The initial links will show up in Yahoo's Instant Messenger application, eBay's profiles, MySpace's own Photobucket subsidiary, and also to provide better profile information to the popular Twitter instant messaging application.

With the growing use of XML data, the need for the coexistence of relational data and XML data is also growing. The classic approach of storing XML data as physical disk files is unsuitable and tedious in many situations. No wonder modern database engines are geared to store XML documents right along with the rest of the relational data. To that end, the XML data type introduced in SQL Server 2005 is a great addition to the database engine. Prior to SQL Server 2005, developers often used VARCHAR or TEXT column types to store XML documents and fragments. Although this approach served well as far as data storage is concerned, it proved to be poor in terms of querying and manipulating the XML data. 1sockchuck writes "The EPA has been seeking at least 100 data center operators willing to share data about their energy usage to help the government develop an Energy Star program for data centers. Thus far, only 54 data centers have signed up, which suggests that few data center operators are eager to tell the government exactly how much energy they are using. The EPA issued a report to Congress last year on data center power usage, and is already developing an Energy Star program to rate servers. Can a program designed to rank the energy efficiency of appliances and computer monitors be a useful tool in addressing the enormous energy consumption of data centers?"

With more and more data being stored in XML, web applications today commonly need some way to view and edit the data stored in an XML file from a web page interface. If the XML data is relatively "flat" and tabular in nature, we can use data Web controls like the DataGrid, GridView, and Repeater. (See Quickly Editing XML Data for an example of editing XML data through a DataGrid control.) But what if the XML data is more hierarchical and in a less tabular format? Consider a company-wide phone book, which is recursively structured into branches and departments, subdepartments, and so forth. How can this XML data, which can have any number of nodes and any level of children, be displayed and edited through a web page? More...

fistfullast33l writes "Bloomberg is reporting that a recently unsealed court case by shareholders against Yahoo reveals that Microsoft offered $40 a share for the Internet search company in January 2007 and Yahoo turned it down. We've extensively discussed Microsoft's bid for Yahoo earlier this year for $33 a share, which was rebuffed. Investor Carl Icahn has launched a proxy fight against Yahoo over the spurning of the Microsoft deal." CWmike notes of Computerworld's coverage of the revelations: "The complaint places much of the blame on [Yahoo CEO Jerry] Yang, describing him as someone with a 'well-known' antipathy toward Microsoft who acted out of a personal interest to keep Yahoo independent. Something wrong with that? Oh, yeah... public company.

Could this be the beginning of the end for Yahoo? Yahoo's interest in a search deal with Google was initially viewed as a poison pill move to thwart efforts of Microsoft to acquire Yahoo. I certainly saw it that way as did many others. Yahoo has continued down this path, announcing a deal with Google late Thursday afternoon. The deal basically outsources Yahoo's search ad placement to Google AdSense. Hey, I use AdSense on my personal blog, so why shouldn't Yahoo! The more the merrier I always say.
