Craigslist's Response To eBay: We Had To Do It!

After eBay sued Craigslist, Craigslist's initial responses were rather weak. eBay made a pretty strong case arguing that Craigslist's board had unilaterally diluted eBay's shares -- which seems pretty questionable. Craigslist initially shot back by accusing eBay of doing the same things eBay was accusing Craigslist of doing -- but that was somewhat misleading. eBay wasn't complaining about the specific actions Craigslist was taking -- but the fact that they had done so unilaterally, despite eBay's ownership stake and board position. Then, Craigslist countersued eBay with a laundry list of charges that effectively amounted to "we don't like them being on our board." Both of these responses were a bit disappointing. While I like Craigslist, and respect Craig and Jim, they still hadn't explained why it was legal for them to unilaterally dilu

EBay Abandons Plans For PayPal Monopoly

An anonymous reader writes "eBay's has lost its fight to ban all payment methods except PayPal. When Paypal originally announced the scheme it was to be global, but they began with a dry run in Australia to test the reaction of government and consumer authorities. In the public slanging match that followed between eBay and the regulatory ACCC, eBay spammed users claiming it was fighting for 'safety benefits for consumers.' Fortunately the consumers won. Conceded eBay vice president Simon Smith, 'While we disagree with the ACCC's draft notice, we have decided to withdraw the notification to stop any further confusion and disruption among the eBay community.' Nevertheless eBay insists PayPal is now always offered as a payment option. Have big corporations finally learned that they can go too far? More chillingly, if eBay had launched the sc

Is eBay Expanding Their Finding 2.0 in the U.S.?

This am, I logged into my eBay (EBAY) account (buying focused account) and found that I had been opted into the 'new search experience'. This is Finding 2.0, which is based on the Magellan search engine. (The engine behind eBay Express). This is the engine that has been in the playground for a while, so nothing new to report other than my guess is that after rolling this out in the UK and other countries, they are now starting to turn the dial on in the USA. At eBay Live, I heard they had 10% of users in the new experience, so my guess is they have bumped that up to 20-40% at this point.

eBay Rolls out New Search in UK

eBay is rolling out new search on the UK site (http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/200806131509242.html). Rather than bringing back results solely for matching keywords, search will now look at the category an item is listed in and any item specifics the seller provides so that buyers are more likely to find what they want. Users will be able to switch to and from the old and new systems from within the search results pages, but the old search system will be retired in 4 weeks. eBay UK will also roll out Window Shopping (called snapshot view in the US).
