Taking the NanoPulse Hot Nanotechnology Cool Energy Solutions: related news

Taking the NanoPulse -- Hot Nanotechnology. Cool Energy Solutions.

Skyrocketing energy costs. Carbon footprints. Global warming. We're consumed with the concerns about consumption of energy. And well we should be. Our industries, our economy, our lifestyles and our environment are on the line. Some of the best minds on the planet are pursuing solutions -- and a number of them, I'm proud to say, are nanotechnology based. This month, I'll be part of a panel discussing Thermal Nanotechnology Solutions at NanoBusiness 2008, a gathering of some of the best scientific and business minds in nanotech. As excited as I am to share information about work on a nanofilm for windows to lower energy needed for heating and cooling, I'm more excited to hear about the work others are doing. I've been investigating some of the technology on the agenda, and it's pretty hot stuff.

Why don't we have a nanotechnology Apollo Program for clean energy?

(Nanowerk Spotlight) It wasn't market forces that landed a man on the moon; and It wasn't market forces that led France to build a nuclear energy infrastructure that now enables it to generate some 75% of its entire energy needs from nuclear power (just an example of what energy policy can do; let's not get into a discussion here of nuclear energy, though). But somehow, the leading political and industrial forces in the United States – together with China the largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet – think that a task so fundamental and massive as fighting global warming and environmental pollution should mostly be left 'to the market'. Unfortunately, it’s just a matter of economic reality that 'the market' will not invest in new energy technologies on a large scale until existing ways of producing energy become more expens

Building better fuel cells with nanotechnology

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Fuel cells have gained a lot of attention because they provide a potential solution to our addiction to fossil fuels. Energy production from oil, coal and gas is an extremely polluting, not to mention wasteful, process that consists of heat extraction from fuel by burning it, conversion of that heat to mechanical energy, and transformation of that mechanical energy into electrical energy. In contrast, fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert a fuel's chemical energy directly to electrical energy with high efficiency and without combustion (although fuel cells operate similar to batteries, an important difference is that batteries store energy, while fuel cells can produce electricity continuously as long as fuel and air are supplied).

Gearing Up for the Reauthorization of the Nanotechnology R&D Act

Last month, I was invited to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation's Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Innovation on the reauthorization of the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act. A big part of this act deals with the reauthorization of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, which was established in fiscal year 2001. Over the past seven years, the nanotechnology industry has grown at a rapid pace. Our Project has found that new nanotechnology consumer products are entering the market at the rate of three to four per week. The reauthorization of the Nanotechnology R&D Act provides us with a key opportunity to rethink our strategy when it comes to our investment in nanotechnology R&D, ensuring that the United States remains a world leader in nanotechnology, and also e

Philips Selected For 2008 Stars Of Energy Chairman's Award

Philips Electronics is proud to announce that it has been selected for the Alliance to Save Energys 2008 Stars of Energy Efficiency Chairmans Award. Established to recognize the nations most proactive champions of energy-efficiency, the Alliance to Save Energys Chairmans Award recognizes Philips based on its 2007 formation and leadership of the Lighting Efficiency Coalition, a collaborative effort by the lighting industry, environmental groups, and legislators to establish new energy efficiency standards for lighting and help phase out less-efficient lighting technologies in the interests of reducing the nations energy consumption and promoting greater sustainability. The Lighting Efficiency Coalition was formed under Philips leadership and was driven and energized by Philips encouragement of governments around the world to adopt

US Data Centers Wary of Sharing Energy Data With Feds

1sockchuck writes "The EPA has been seeking at least 100 data center operators willing to share data about their energy usage to help the government develop an Energy Star program for data centers. Thus far, only 54 data centers have signed up, which suggests that few data center operators are eager to tell the government exactly how much energy they are using. The EPA issued a report to Congress last year on data center power usage, and is already developing an Energy Star program to rate servers. Can a program designed to rank the energy efficiency of appliances and computer monitors be a useful tool in addressing the enormous energy consumption of data centers?"
