Spin control New technique sorts nanotubes by length: related news

Spin Control: New Technique Sorts Nanotubes By Length

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have reported a new technique to sort batches of carbon nanotubes by length using high-speed centrifuges. Many potential applications for carbon nanotubes depend on the lengths of these microscopic cylinders, and one of the most important features of the new technique, say the scientists, is that it should be easily scalable to produce industrial quantities of high-quality nanotubes.

Spin Control: New Technique Sorts Nanotubes by Length

In a schematic of NIST's length separation technique for carbon nanotubes (l.), the nanotubes start at the bottom of a dense fluid. When spun in a centrifuge, the nanotubes begin to migrate through the fluid driven by their buoyancy, but the longer ones move faster, spreading them out by length. Photos (r.) shows a typical sample at the start and after 94 hours of spinning at 1257 radians per second (roughly 12,000 RPM). Credit: NIST

New iPhone? - New on MacOpinion

Everyone seems convinced Steve Jobs will announce a new iPhone next week at WWDC and the speculation is wild as to what new features it will include: 3G cellular support, GPS, new design, etc. While I'll admit the evidence is strong that a new phone will be introduced -- one cannot ignore the low supply of the current model or indicators like AT&T's "no June/July vacations" memo to staff -- I am not convinced this new phone will be radically different from the current model.

New iPhone 3G

We’ve all been hearing a million different things about this “new” iPhone that is suppose to be coming out any day now! I recently spoke to one of my friends who works at AT&T and I guess the new gossip going around is that the new iPhone is going to be cheaper than the original. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this hard to believe. The 3G is suppose to be faster, have GPS, a new glossy black cover (that is said to be color changeable), slightly thicker, updated software and the camera is expected to be better. I’m sure there will be a ton more things that will be changed or newly added to the new iPhone, so it’s a little strange that Apple would make the new iPhone less expensive...Especially, because people are going to buy it no matter how much it is.

Mervyns to Open Five New Stores, Launch E-Commerce Site

Hayward, Calif.-based Mervyns announced plans to open five new stores, sell certain other locations and launch an e-commerce Web site. Mervyns said it plans to open five new stores in its core markets in 2009, bringing the total number of new Mervyns stores to 17 since the company was acquired by its private-equity owners three years ago. Mervyns reported it has engaged DJM Realty LLC to sell five-10 underperforming stores. The real estate portfolio transition is expected to generate $25 million to $50 million in cash to fund operations and new growth initiatives. The company will launch a fully integrated e-commerce Web site in the fourth quarter of 2008. Mervyns said the e-commerce Web site presents a new growth vehicle and multichannel opportunity for existing and new customers nationwide, and forecasts that the online platform could g

New "Columbus Circle West" Community Graced With New Arts and Culture Center

NEW YORK - Nestled in the center of a new community of over 3,500 condos, "Columbus Circle West" is the brand new state-of-the-art facility, the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center, or MMAC. It was designed by the architects who created some of the country's most acclaimed theatre spaces, including the Joyce and Arena Stage. Located in Manhattan at 248 West 60th Street in the midst of a brand new luxury condominium community called The Element, MMAC's aim is to offer the best dance and fitness classes available to the public, while also acting as a multi-purpose arts center.

Phoenix Will Try New "Sprinkle" Technique

New motto for the Phoenix spacecraft: If at first you don't succeed, then dust yourself off and try again. Since the Martian soil is proving to be a challenge for the Mars lander, engineers will try a new technique to try delivering the frozen arctic soil into the TEGA, or the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Anaylzer, designed to bake and sniff samples to identify key ingredients in the soil. The soil is clumping together, and won't pass through a screen that brings it to the ovens on board the spacecraft. Engineers operating the Robotic Arm on Phoenix Lander are testing a revised method they are calling the sprinkle technique.

Amazon.com Sues New York State over New Tax Law

Amazon.com sued the state of New York and its governor over its new tax law, called by some the "Amazon Tax." The law claims that Internet retailers with affiliates residing in New York must collect New York sales tax because those affiliates count as a physical presence, a claim Amazon rejects.
