Slip enhances nanofluidic energy harvest: related news

Slip enhances nanofluidic energy harvest

Nanofluidic channels are an intriguing means of harvesting electrical energy from unusual sources, such as the bumping of car suspension or even the flexing of your shoes. nanotechweb.org interviews Derek Stein of Brown University's physics department to find out more.

Linking Social Housing and Energy Efficiency

Linking Social Housing and Energy Efficiency explores the link between the theory, policy and practice of energy-efficient social housing. The theory addresses the general question of what is energy-efficient housing and why a lot of social housing is not energy efficient. Current policy and programs in Ontario are reviewed to discover what incentives and opportunities exist to enhance the energy efficiency of affordable housing. The author also considers social housing and the environmental policy issue of energy conservation. Three case studies of social housing in Ottawa are used to support a series of recommendations.

Why don't we have a nanotechnology Apollo Program for clean energy?

(Nanowerk Spotlight) It wasn't market forces that landed a man on the moon; and It wasn't market forces that led France to build a nuclear energy infrastructure that now enables it to generate some 75% of its entire energy needs from nuclear power (just an example of what energy policy can do; let's not get into a discussion here of nuclear energy, though). But somehow, the leading political and industrial forces in the United States – together with China the largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet – think that a task so fundamental and massive as fighting global warming and environmental pollution should mostly be left 'to the market'. Unfortunately, it’s just a matter of economic reality that 'the market' will not invest in new energy technologies on a large scale until existing ways of producing energy become more expens

U.S. Department of Energy to Invest up to $13.7 Million for Breakthrough Solar Energy Projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that DOE will invest up to $13.7 million, over three years (Fiscal Years 2008 - 2010), for 11 university-led projects that will focus on developing advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturing processes and products. These projects are integral to President Bush's Solar America Initiative, which aims to make solar energy cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity by 2015. Increasing the use of solar energy is also critical to diversifying our nation's energy sources in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on foreign oil. Combined with a minimum university and industry cost share of 20%, up to $17.4 million will be invested in these projects.

Building better fuel cells with nanotechnology

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Fuel cells have gained a lot of attention because they provide a potential solution to our addiction to fossil fuels. Energy production from oil, coal and gas is an extremely polluting, not to mention wasteful, process that consists of heat extraction from fuel by burning it, conversion of that heat to mechanical energy, and transformation of that mechanical energy into electrical energy. In contrast, fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert a fuel's chemical energy directly to electrical energy with high efficiency and without combustion (although fuel cells operate similar to batteries, an important difference is that batteries store energy, while fuel cells can produce electricity continuously as long as fuel and air are supplied).

Nominations Invited for Karl W. Boer Solar Energy Medal of Merit Award

The University of Delaware is accepting nominations until Wednesday, Sept. 3, for the 2009 Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit. The medal, which carries a cash award of $50,000, is bestowed biennially upon an individual who has made significant pioneering contributions to the promotion of solar energy as an alternate source of energy through research, development or economic enterprise, or to an individual who has made extraordinarily valuable and enduring contributions to the field of solar energy in other ways.

Gigabyte EP35-DS4: DES in Action

Now the current trend is focusing on energy more than ever, regardless whether to cut costs at the end of the month or the simple knowledge that over half of the United State's energy is produced from coal, therefore lower energy consumption translates into less coal pollution. When many consumers are penny pinching wherever they can, companies like Gigabyte and ASUS have decided to begin marketing energy saving motherboards not to a niche market, but to the masses. For this article we will put one of these new Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) motherboards to the test with a power hungry Q6600 QuadCore processor. We will see if you can really save power without compromising your computers performance or more importantly its stability. By the end of this review we will find out if DES shows any appreciable value or is just more marketin

E.ON Supports Nanotechnology with 6 Million Euros

Minute particles with great potential in the energy technology sector - Continuation of 60 million euros research program Exploring the potential of nanotechnology for energy supply - this is the focus of the current invitation for applications under E.ON's International Research Initiative. This year a sum of 6 million euros is again available for this purpose. Teams and researchers from all over the world can apply to E.ON to obtain support for projects dealing with the use of nanotechnology in fields such as energy storage, electricity transmission, carbon capture and storage or energy saving through Nano LEDs for example. With this focus E.ON is backing a still very young research discipline because experts assume that the minute particles ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers in size can greatly benefit energy use that is both more effi

Taking the NanoPulse -- Hot Nanotechnology. Cool Energy Solutions.

Skyrocketing energy costs. Carbon footprints. Global warming. We're consumed with the concerns about consumption of energy. And well we should be. Our industries, our economy, our lifestyles and our environment are on the line. Some of the best minds on the planet are pursuing solutions -- and a number of them, I'm proud to say, are nanotechnology based. This month, I'll be part of a panel discussing Thermal Nanotechnology Solutions at NanoBusiness 2008, a gathering of some of the best scientific and business minds in nanotech. As excited as I am to share information about work on a nanofilm for windows to lower energy needed for heating and cooling, I'm more excited to hear about the work others are doing. I've been investigating some of the technology on the agenda, and it's pretty hot stuff.

Hobbyist Renewable Energy?

vossman77 writes "I was looking into renewable energy from a hobbyist perspective, maybe generating a few watts of solar or wind power, just to reduce my electric bill. But upon further review, I found out that I need a special grid tie AC inverter that shuts off when the grid turns off (for worker safety reasons) and makes the current in-phase with the grid. These two additional features over the cheap inverters sold at department store, makes the cost upwards of $2000, but support more watts than I need. While this is fine for large scale projects, it is out of range for a small scale hobbyist. A Google search came with some home brew hacks at best. So, are there any Slashdotters out there doing small scale renewable energy projects with grid tie systems? What are other options for the hobbyist to play around with renewable energy, othe

'The key to energy is integration of renewables and fossil fuels'

It's not either alternative energy sources or fossil fuels, Dr. Carl Bauer, director of the US Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory, told The Jerusalem Post at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya this week.
