Biodesign Institute scientist John Chaput and his research team have made the first self-assembled nanostructures composed entirely of glycerol nucleic acid -- a synthetic analog of DNA. The nanostructures contain additional properties not found in natural DNA, including the ability to form mirror image structures. Gearing Up for the Reauthorization of the Nanotechnology R&D Act

Last month, I was invited to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation's Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Innovation on the reauthorization of the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act. A big part of this act deals with the reauthorization of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, which was established in fiscal year 2001. Over the past seven years, the nanotechnology industry has grown at a rapid pace. New iPhone 3G

We’ve all been hearing a million different things about this “new� iPhone that is suppose to be coming out any day now! I recently spoke to one of my friends who works at AT&T and I guess the new gossip going around is that the new iPhone is going to be cheaper than the original. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this hard to believe. The 3G is suppose to be faster, have GPS, a new glossy black cover (that is said to be color changeable), slightly thicker, updated software and the camera is expected to be better. I’m sure there will be a ton more things that will be changed or newly added to the new iPhone, so it’s a little strange that Apple would make the new iPhone less expensive...Especially, because people are going to buy it no matter how much it is.

California Expands DNA Identification Policies

The Los Angeles Times is reporting on a new California policy to match the DNA of suspected criminals to the criminal's family members in order to use them as investigative leads. Use of partial DNA matching is drawing fire over privacy concerns from citizens and law experts. FBI officials are hesitating as well, though their concern is that the courts will not accept such techniques. Quoting: "The policy, which takes effect immediately, is designed to work like this: The state's crime lab will tell police about DNA profiles that come up during routine searches of California's offender database and closely resemble, but do not match, the DNA left at a crime scene. (Previously, the state refused to tell police about these partial matches.) When such partial matches do not surface or fail to produce a lead, a more customized familial search

ETH Zurich and the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory (ZRL) have today announced the establishment of a strategic partnership in nanotechnology

The two partner institutions will operate a new, common nanotech laboratory, which will be built on the ZRL campus. The new building inludes cutting-edge research infrastructure and will cost 90 mil-lion USD. The two partners have a long-standing tradition of scientific cooperation, and now make an important step to deepen this collaboration further by forming a strategic partnership in the field of nanotechnology. Everyone seems convinced Steve Jobs will announce a new iPhone next week at WWDC and the speculation is wild as to what new features it will include: 3G cellular support, GPS, new design, etc. While I'll admit the evidence is strong that a new phone will be introduced -- one cannot ignore the low supply of the current model or indicators like AT&T's "no June/July vacations" memo to staff -- I am not convinced this new phone will be radically different from the current model.

is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Richard A.L. Jones FRS as the new Chairman of its Advisory Group.
