Researchers Pave Way For Compressor-Free Refrigeration

Hugh Pickens brings news that scientists from Penn State have developed a new method for heat-transfer that may replace the common compressor-based system used in household appliances. Quoting: "Zhang's approach uses the change from disorganized to organized that occurs in some polarpolymers when placed in an electric field. The natural state of these materials is disorganized with the various molecules randomly positioned. When electricity is applied, the molecules become highly ordered and the material gives off heat and becomes colder. When the electricity is turned off, the material reverts to its disordered state and absorbs heat. The researchers report a change in temperature for the material of about 22.6 degrees Fahrenheit... Repeated randomizing and ordering of the material combined with an appropriate heat exchanger could provid

DataCase may help you access your iPhone files

Accessing iPhone’s files using Wi-Fi is an attractive idea and SSH had already made that possible. However, the technology is too complicated and hence, Veiosoft is developing an application called DataCase. The application is in public data and can help you turn your iPhone into a wireless storage device. This could mean that files on iPhone can be made accessible from anywhere with this new application. You could go ahead and access documents, files, music, photos etc. The technology is being kept as simple as possible and is going to be user-friendly. Making Strides Toward Low-Cost LED Lighting

Roland Piquepaille writes "You all know that incandescent bulbs are pretty inefficient, converting only 10% of electricity into light — and 90% into heat. Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, could soon replace incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs in our homes. They are more efficient and environmentally friendly. But LED lights are currently too expensive because they are using a sapphire-based technology. Now, Purdue University researchers have found a way to build low-cost and bright LEDs for home lighting. According to the researchers, the LED lights now on the market cost about $100 while LED lights based on their new technology could be commercially available within a couple of years for a cost of about $5. It would also help to cut our electricity bill by about 10%.
